Default When cranking an engine should there be oil pressure.

I was trying to crank my newly built 383 over to prime the oil system. We are not getting oil pressure on the auto meter manual gauge. I'm not sure how fast it was spinning, I didn't watch the tach. It is full of oil also. There is a slight squeaking sound in the engine, it scares me.

Should I see oil pressure when cranking a new engine?

Spinning the engine with the starter will yield hardly any gauge oil pressure. The squeaking sound on a new motor is quite normal, if your valve train is all new just wait until you start it.

well a priming tank should be used, its not always a good idea to crank the engine over dry especialy on a fresh engine. im not gonna say that its ran a bearing dry but it could be a possibility

We put permatex ultra slick on every bearing and moving part when we put it together. The pan has 10w30 valvoline potroleum oil in it.

I'm a little worried that after shiming the windage tray for the 4.00" crank that maybe the pick up tube is bottomed out on the pan.
Another thought, I hope I put the shim on right on the oil pump for the double roller chain. I will check it tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure I have it on correctly.

Not to hijack but is there a way to prime the engine and spin the oil pump before starting the engine itself to lubricate parts if the engines been sitting for a while, new, new parts etc?

Seems like I remember getting 35-40 psi on the oil while cranking checking out compression.

I was able to prime my motor with the plugs out with about 20 seconds of cranking.

Normal cranking now will produce about 40 psi of oil pressure.

It takes a few cranking cycles to build pressure. But it should read after about 20 seconds of spinning it over.

If you are going to "prime" the oil pump by cranking you might as well start it. LOL
You should pump oil directly into the oil galley.

We cranked on it about 5 times for roughly 10 seconds each time. didn't show any signs of oil pressure. But taking the plugs out is a good idea for getting the speed up. Also my buddie said next we need to get it to fire up like mentioned above. See what happens.
But I would really like to see some pressure before start up! Scares the **** out of me what might happen in about 10 seconds into running it with out oil pressure.

We also seen no signs of spark. But I expected to deal with this. It did this the first time I tried getting the car running when I bought it. I know how to trouble shoot the MSD box. But I need to get a serial to USB cable for the laptop with stupid *** vista. The cable I have is for XP or 2000 OS.

I know my camaro showed at least 20 or 30 psi when cranking with the plugs out of it.

Yep. Same here for the last motor I built. No plugs, crank for 10 seconds, and get 20-30 psi.

I took the plugs out and tried again, finally it hit 40psi of cranking pressure. Cool. Now on to the ignition problem. I picked up a cable for my pc that is vista compatible so now I can see if we have rpm's on the msd software.

Now I gotta put the front cover and balancer back on.

I cranked it several times last night and got all the lifters primed up. She was spitting oil out of all 16 push rods. Yeah, I was pleased to see that. It hit almost 40psi every time I cranked it.
