Default What's the latest in 'budget' 427s?

Hello all,

Thinking about a new motor for the season. My only requirements are:
  1. 427ci (7.0L)
  2. Wet sump
  3. Make over 500HP at the rear wheels (through longtubes)
  4. ZERO surging

So to me that suggests I don't really need anything exotic. I would really appreciate some recommendations as to who is offering a motor that's economically built for such modest goals.

I'm also open to a short block and h/c combo from two different providers. But again, my emphasis is on price/value.

Thanks,

-ch

You must be spoiled or something....."modest goals, nothing exotic, economically built" and you want 500 RWHP from a 427 based motor.

Well, you are looking at 600-650 FWHP, and in the range of $10-$12K if you can do some bargain searching.

There are so many options out there, and there are so many threads on this, you really need to do more searching, as you can:

Locate a LS7 shortblock and be done with it, find a set of CNC'd heads, cam and intake. Pick up some injectors, MAF, etc....

LS3 or L92 block and use a little more stroke on teh crank to get your cubes, CNC'd heads, cam, and intake, injectors, MAF, etc...

Wetsleeve/drysleeve a LS1 or LS2 block and come up with your 4.125 bore and throw in a 4.00 crank, along with your corresponding parts, but now you are in the range of $15K.

You could locate a 6.0 iron block and shove in an overbore and crank and come up with 427.

And you can go find a LS2 block and put in a crank,

or you can give us more details on like what you have to start with and what you consider "economically priced"

If Katech still has their special going. You can't beat it. Best bang for the buck out now. Period. Bar none..

I agree, and I believe the sale goes to the end of this month.

Definitely Katech. I've been to their shop and it's a top notch outfit that builds motors for power and durability.

Katech 20% off sale goes until 2-28. 20% off the Value 427 puts it at $5560 for the assembled short block. Killer deal, not to be missed. Me, I'd just put an LS7 top end on it and be done. With a Katech Torquer cam there's your 500+ rwhp and no surging. In fact, you should get a price on a turn-key engine from Katech. At 20% off everything, I don't think you will beat their price unless you buy junk.

This is all great feedback, thanks. The Katech sale is interesting. Let me give you a few more details on what I'm doing and perhaps you can guide me a little further.

I plan to retain as much of the original LS1 parts (pan, covers, pushrods, lifters, etc) as possible. The Katech price for the long block is an additional $5,000 over the short block. I am assuming that if I buy the heads, cam, gasket, etc and assemble it myself I can cut down on the cost, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Also, I'd be curious about a comparison to another well-respected builder like Texas Speed and their LS7-based short block, also at around $5,500:

Well, trying to make 500 RWHP, you could get the CNC'd L92 heads from Scroggin Dickey for what $800? And with everything else, cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, intake/TB, you are gonna have @ $2000-$3000 in hard parts up top depending on which route you went (new/used, etc...) And, if you wanted say, a set of AFR's or something, you are gonna have an EASY $4000+ in your top end.

i just picked up a 6.0l iron block complete super cheap. what would be the biggest cubes i can get without a bore, just a rotating assembly?
plan on doing l92 heads/cam/ hoping to push 427ci but am new to ls motors.

is scroggin dickey the best to get the l92 heads from?
can 550 rwhp be achieved? with a big hydro roller cam?

All you need is a 427ci shortblock, the cheaper ported L92's with the L92 intake and a 228/236 Cam.We've done a few and they all push over 500rwhp and stock drivability.

Also consider that LS2,LS3,LS7 motor needs different top valley cover, front cover, cam sensor, relocate knock sensor to side of block which also need harness extended, cam sensor harness extended, timing chain, head bolts. etc...
If you need a short or long block give me a call.

Our L92 427 is $5489 so you have a few options from some very dependable builders
