Price to assemble a 402?
Price to assemble a 402? Guys, if I yank my LS2 and ordered a 402 rotating assembly, what does it usuallly run $$ to have a shop tear it apart and re-assemble it? A kit runs around $2K and an assembled shortblock runs $4500. It seems like I should be able to save roughly $1000 by having a local shop assemble the shortblock, Im guessing, maybe more?? What do you think? Input?
I guess I could do it myself but I would rather not try it.
I guess if I bought a complete shortblock, I could sell my 38K mile stock LS2 shortblock and offset a few $$. I just find it hard saving excess of $3K.

Don't forget that you will have to have all of the machining done to the block (align hone/hone cylinders/square the decks/balance the assembly/clearance the block etc etc etc) that will add up quickly. It would be better to just get the forged shortblock and sell your stock one.
It costs more to rebuild a motor then it does to build a new one on the labor end, for LS1 stuff.
For us to assemble an LS2 stroker $1200, solvent clean block, align hone, torque plate hone and balance crankshaft.
pin fit the rods, install pistons.

have an LS2 stroker shortblock built, get it over to your shop and do the swap with very little downtime.
an LS2 shortblock is worth decent cash. I made out with $2500 for the longblock out of my low mile GTO. More complete the better.

Oh yeah, you are WAY better off buying a shortblock if you want to save some money. And being able to sell your old motor will help you save even more money, AND you won't have as much down time either.

For my ls2 swap, I bought a used bare ls 2 block and shopped around for all the goodies (timing chain cover, rear cover chain etc.) and got some great deals. It's costing me 1500 labor to have the entire long block built. When it's done I'll pop out the old and put in the new, and re-coop some of the monies by selling my ls1 engine. Building the short block is probably going to work out close to the same cost as if I bought a short block from one of the vendors here.
