Default 418/427 ls3 Build Help

I'm ready to jump in and do a complete overhaul on my car (motor, trans, rear end) and it will mainly be for drag purposes but with some drive ability. I'm looking to eventually buy everything in that order so first things first. I've been eyeing the TSP 418 ls3 for a long time and just recently thought that since I'm wanting to stay all motor why not go with the 427 ls3. So I've been looking and reading on here about what all I want to go with and am just looking for comments and suggestions in some of the gray areas. Also money is not unlimited, I'm trying to stick to at least some sort of budget. Here's basically the list I'm putting together:

TSP 427 ls3 (have)
Wiseco pistons (have)
Callies Compstar crank and rods (have)
Patrick G spec'd cam
TFS 235's
Fast 96mm intake and tb
Harland Sharp or Yella Terra rockers
Morel lifters
TSP ported ls6 oil pump
Kooks 1 7/8 headers

Hope everyone on here can help me get a good setup together.
Thanks

I have a brand new LS3 block sitting here just waiting for funds to finally build it (other **** got in the way). I was going to do a 427 but decided I wanted a power adder (turbo or procharger) so I'm going to go with a 4" stroke and do a 418. Probably gonna go with a callies/compstar setup.

At least you've got a start. I'm like you though, I'm just going to have to buy things by how the funds come around. I'd like to have the shortblock at least ordered by May so I can at least get a start on this project.

It looks like you have a pretty good idea of your build listed. I think it looks pretty good. You just need to get an idea on the compression your looking to run, and the port design on the heads. I am not sure if the TFS 235s are offered in the square port style of the LS3. I went with TFS 235s for my 416 because of the cathedral ports. Cathedral ports seem to make more power under the curve but less top end then the LS3 style port. I have the FAST 92 for it - I do not think you can get a 102mm FAST for the cathedral port heads.

Good luck with the project

second all of that, TF235's are only offered in cathedral port and therefore must be matched with a Fast90 or 92. The fast 102 is for rectangular ports only.

I've got a fairly similar motor already built, in fact, I'm going to start working on the install here shortly. I went L92 427, 254/262 cam, TFS 235 heads, Yella Terras, FAST 92, 1 7/8" kooks with true dual exhaust. My goals are similar to yours, complete upgrade, only difference for me was that I already had a 12 bolt in the rear. But, I had the MN6 rebuilt and I'm throwing in a new clutch and flywheel. I think that I'm going to be really happy with mine, I tried to keep the cost as reasonable as possible for a 427 upgrade, but its still adding up to be a fair amount of coin. If you want to PM me your budget, I can compare it to mine... as well as my actual (at least how its looking right now).

Very cool man. Let us know dyno/track #'s.

Thats the setup I was originally going to do (N/A 427ci) but decided I'd rather lose 9ci and go with a 418ci boosted setup. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't even paying attention to that . So now I guess I'll go with the 96mm intake and tb from vengeance racing.

General Jack, like LS1kid said let us know what kind of numbers you make or track times. Yeah for a complete build up it's hard to keep the cost down, but I guess you have to pay to play .

Do these setups have that much of a geometry setup or is it just more building for TQ opposed to high revs? I was just curious why you do a 427 boosted?

To achieve a 427 with a LS3 you need a 4.1" stroke, while a 418 calls for a 4" stroke. The bore size is the same.

The sleeves on an LS3 aren't long enough to accomodate a 4.1" stroke safely with boost pressures because it brings the piston down further in the bore almost bringing the piston ring right out the bottom of the bore.

You will see on TSP's website that they recommend the 427 LS3 only for N/A applications.

I have LS2 with a 4.100" stroke and 4.030" bore = 418cid. and been running for three years now with nitrous. and never had one single problem with the stroke or any thing else. My new build is going to be a LS3 block with a 4.100" stroke and 4.080" bore= 427cid. Shirel Dickey has been doing it for a while.

Since I'm going to stay N/A I'm pretty sure I'll go with the 427 ls3. There's nothing wrong with nitrous or FI plus I don't know much about either, but this is my first completely new motor build and I just want to stay N/A. Been doing some homework and i've read that the 245's would probably give me more up top but the 235's would provide more power under the curve.

IC, TY, I thought you meant you already had a block and were debating to go one or the other. Sounds more like you picked the block with the intent of the 418 FA.

MrEracer, Has been putting 4.100" cranks in the LS3 bored .035" and He helped me build my LS2 418 with a 4.100" crank. There's plenty of sleeve for the piston skirt. And a LS3 stock bore and 4.00 stroke = 415cid. and with a 4.100 stroke = 426cid.

Yes I know it is possible but that motor is N/A. I was saying that the longer 4.1" stroke is not as safe with high boost pressures as a 418 with a 4" stroke would be.

I was just stating that TSP has it written in their shortblock descriptions that they dont recommend the 427 for anything but N/A.
