Default Chain tensioner

Has anyone added a timing chain tensioner to their build and do you think it was worth it?I'm leaning toward high HP FI builds.I'm running a 6.0 block and will need to drill and tap to add tensioner.

you have to drill it out? i havent messed with the 6.0 but my 5.7 and 6.2 both had the holes already for my gm tensioner to bolt right on to... i might be wrong, i just thought all blocks had provisions...
p.s. from what i understand the old style timing dampener is discontinued and has been replaced with the tensioner, thats what sdparts.com says anyway, my engine builder recomended and runs one on all his as well

Ya.It has the boss for everything but it's blank.You would think trucks would need a tensioner more then anyone.

I have the LS3 tensioner on mine, but I don't think you can use that kind on your block. The mounting holes are too far apart. You would need the LS2 setup. It's just a dampener block is all it is. I am not 100% certain on the mounting holes, but that's what I have heard.

I had an LS3 tensioner mounted on my LS2 that I am building. However after reading some threads on another board about these new style tensioners failing I got spooked and reinstalled the LS2 block style. I believe a guy from New Era Performance has seen these failures and recommends the LS2 setup.

Now this dont mean every LS3 tensioner will fail as with everything else on the internet you hear more about the problem ones than the thousands that are fine. I just chose to revert back to a simpler setup with the C5R chain from Katech my motor is going to see it's share of abuse.

I'm wondering if they are really worth the trouble.I know for the late model Gen IVs the tesioner is a nessecity beacuse of their design.I've read about a number of failures of the tensioner in these motors.For the Gen III
I thought they were there just to keep the chain tight for higher mileage motors.I really hate having a problem with an item that was questionable on whether it was going to help a motor and then it breaks.I imagine there are a lot of big power Gen IIIs out there that are not running tensioners.I'm building a twin turbo 403 and figure I won't be putting more then 50,000 miles on it.If I do get that far i would have no problem putting in a new chain.Plus the new double roller chains should out last the stock chain.I've built a lot of high HP Grand Nationals and on most of those motors we leave the factory tensioner out and the motors hold up real well.Still on the fence on this one.
