Default 2009 vs 2008 LS7 engine and ECU differences ?

I am close to purchasing a LS7 cate engine. I have noticed that there are new part numbers for the 2009 LS7 cate engine and ECU. It also seems that a 2008 ECU will not work on a 2009 crate engine? I think that the max engine RPM for 2009 is 6,500 vs 7000 for 2008. Is this the only difference?

If I have a 2008 ECU does it mean that I cannot use a 2009 crate engine?

Don't want to make an expensive mistake.
Thanks,
pete

You can not use the wrong controller, you can't use a new engine with your controller, you'll have to find an old stock engine, or buy a new controller

Thanks for the confirmation.

Do you know the details of the differeces between the 2008 and 2009 Crate LS7's? My assumption is that the actual crate engine should not really care what ECU is used provided that the internal sensors are the same.

just a guess but its probably the pins on the ecu just like 98 LS1 vs. 99-02 LS1 pcms.

I would guess that since controller kit comes with the wiring harness, throttle pedal, O2 sensors, MAFM that pin location should not matter so much. I wonder if one of the reasons is to reduce the maximum rpm to 6500 for durability/warranty purposes starting in 2009?

You should be able to use any controller on your motor as long as it matches the reluctor 58vs24. I don't know if the 2009 pcm has any differences vs 2008, or if it has been locked by GM.
Some even use Ls1 pcms for ease of tuning and switch reluctor or get 58 to 24 convertor box

I would double check the max rpm thing if I were you. I think all ls7's redline at 7K. I don't think they changed anything internally between the 08 and 09 motors.

I have been wrong once before though, it was so long ago I don't remember what it was though, so that could be a mistake also...

Regarding the RPM Limit:

In the latest GMPP catalog (PP# 21) on page 288, it lists the specification of the 2009 LS7 controller as well as the older 2006 -2008 controller.

19243066
LS7 Controller Kit, 2009 NEW
(not shown)
• Includes all the components required to
run your 2009 LS7 crate engine
• For individual engine controller, use
P/N 19253067 (included in kit)
• Max RPM 6500
• Will not run 2006-2008 LS7’s

19166567
LS7 Controller Kit, 2006-2008 OLD
• Includes all the components required to
run your 2006-2008 LS7 crate engine
• For individual engine controller, use
P/N 19166569 (included in kit)
• Max RPM 7100
• Will not run 2009 LS7’s

The 2009 LS7 crate engine also has a new part number (Page 78) 19211710
Engine is NOT compatible with LS7 Controller
Kit P/N 19166557 due to MAP sensor and
throttle body changes

The differences are still a bit of a mystery. I suppose that the MAP sensor and throttle body could be swapped. The new 6500 RPM controller redline suggests an internal engine change or a Durability/Warranty cost concern.

Maybe its just a misprint and the max RPM is still 7000?
