Swapping LS3 Crate into 02 Camaro, worth it?
#22
I am running the G6x3 in my LS3 block/416. It is so smooth, it sounds and feels stock at idle and while cruising . But go WOT, it is a beast unleashed. Only thing I would have done different is get bigger heads and cam.

Just get an after market throttle body like a FAST, Nick Williams, etc. and just get it to the correct size for the intake i.e. 90, 92, 102. The stock LS1 throttle body one is to small and two it is only three bolts instead of four bolts to the intake manifold.

For what you get with the GM crate (I'd go with the 376/480), accessories, intake, injectors, valve covers, coils, wires, etc., it's hard to beat - plus it has a warranty. With boltons and a good tune, you'll get 425-450rwhp and matching torque and idle like stock. If you buy one of these aftermarket engines, it will require (in most cases): an intake, injectors and/or rails, and is already assembled with most of the gaskets and little things that add up. Buy your cable TB, LPE 58x to 24x converter box, some conversion/extension pigtails, tune and go.
A fuel pump would be a smart upgrade as would an optimized intake and exhaust. If you put miles on your car and need reliability, this is a great way to go. If it's a weekend toy, then build it with the biggest cam you can make run. It probably won't run much/any faster given the torque curve these stock/hot cammed LS3s are putting down.
Don't believe that the aftermarket motors are more economical. You will seldom get into a motor, COMPLETE for less than the 6-7k price of this crate motor, especially if someone else is doing the work. The little things add up.
This is not bashing our sponsors, they are awesome, but some folks' applications are better suited by some things than others. If I want max effort, I'm going to a speed shop. If I want driveable and reliable, I'm going to go crate (though I may have the same speed shop do the work).

I have an 01 Camaro with a GM LS3 crate motor swap. Dont worry about the reluctor wheel. Lingenfelter made me a box to convert the 58x to 24x signals so you dont have to change it out.
its a good swap, worth the money. LGx3 cam and ported heads = 500rw 6spd

i'm sorry but all that dam work and money and he only made 23 more hp and 50 pd/ft then his heads/cam ls1??!!!? GAWWD no thanks lol. I'd build up an ls1 with nitrous over an ls3 anyday.

no replacement for displacement jk. see that ls3 is stock making 433 rwhp so then you but * JUST A CAM* in then you get 475-501 rwhp. then later in the ls3's life it gets big *** intake, stage 3 heads, nos shot, and more. see the ls3's love mods and tq is a very nice thing to have!!!! i drove a h/c ws6 and it ran great but nooooooo torque at all!!!!

What he said,
Get the GMPP LS3 Crate, it's a great engine and has a great warranty.
The Lingenfelter converter will take care of your reluctor wheel problem.

The LS3 in that article wasn't stock, it most likely had the hotcam which with boltons usually make around 430RWHP. But still I would rather have a bigger cubed engine with a smaller cam making more power then a heads and cam LS1 with better street manners and MPG's.
