Default LS1 swap to LS3.

Not sure if to post here or the Gen III forum. Anyways, I was looking for answers as to what is needed to swap my LS1 for an LS6 in my '98 Camaro. Will an LS3 drop right in? What about the transmission (6-speed)? When will I need to see a smog ref? Questions like that and other stuff. Living in Cali, it's possible, just not sure what's needed. I know all smog stuff is needed. Thanks.

*Oops, I meant LS6, not an LS3.*

I would start by upgrading to a 1999-02 PCM. You can use your wiring Harness and just re-pin the Connectors. It would actually be a good idea to keep your Engine Harness cause the 1998 is unique.

Everything will bolt up as it was with your Camaro..just make sure to install the little Pilot Bearing/Bushing, and check into the PCV System.

Are the knock sensors different or will the 98 style ones work?

If you're swapping to an LS6, then nothing really changes. Maybe the knock sensors and the valley cover. If the LS6 comes with a valley cover, you may have to modify your pvc system alittle. Do a search it will come up

Take a look at the sticky at the top, there's a ton of info there. It bolts in fine. You'll use f-body accessories and will relocate the knock sensor(s)...see the sticky for all that. Then just use LPE's 24x-58x conversion box and make sure to locate it in the car or near the PCM.

They'd work. But, there's been many problems associated with the '98 style knock sensors. So, it'd be a good idea to change to the 99+ sensors and harness anyways. The harness is about $30. Sensors can get a little costly though, but worth it.
