Removing a crushed dowel pin on VVT cam

Removing a crushed dowel pin on VVT cam Cannot seem to get the pin out on either the old or the new VVT cam. The new cam has a crushed pin.
Any removal ideas? Tried vice grips.
Is the pin on this cam unique in some way?
