Default melling oil pump issues.

Was going to start up my LSX today. I noticed no oil pressure. After taking off valve cover, I turned over the motor 30 seconds or so, still no oil. I raised up the car, took off the oil filter, still no oil. I'm sure all the o-rings, barbell restrictor, etc. are in place. Has anyone had a problem w/ a Melling high volume oil pump? It still has the high volume spring in it.
Thanks

If this is a new build you may have to spin it over a little longer to get the pump primed. I always leave the spark plugs out and keep injectors off until it builds pressure. It also helps to spin it over a few times and then let it set for a while. You will get 35 psi or more with just the starter ( without the compression it cranks quite fast).

i've used 100's of the melling pumps, never had any issues. If there is a problem i would bet it's a pinched pickup oring

well I took out the spark plugs. That didn't help. We checked the o-ring on the pickup tube, nothing wrong there. I guess I'll be taking the front cover off seeing that I have the only defective oil pump melling has ever made. I'm going through hell with this damn LSX with a perfectly good 400+ HP LS1 sitting there laughing at me laying in the floor!

Go throw an ls6 pump on there, see if you get oil.

Did you prime it?

Well I was told to button the engine up and just crank it. Got 80 lbs faster than when you get an oil change. Figured out trying to prime an LS motor is a serious waste of time!

Not really a waste of time, but you have to spin the starter for quite a while before you will see anything on the gauge. I just held the starter on for say 30 sec. and then connected the plugs/injectors and fired it up. Never saw anything on the gauge untill I lit it up just like you.

You can prime the system through the port at the back of the block. Remove the oil pressure sending unit and either gravity feed some in with a tube and a funnel or feed it with a pressurized accumulator or hand pump.

Spin the starter for a minute, fire it up.

got a melling high volume on mine, gonna fire mine off for the first time this weekend. im betting you just need to run it, i put an ls motor in a t/a 2 months ago we cranked it for 45 seconds never saw anything on the gauge, fired it off and it came up, it may just take more rpm to get the pump flowing.

I agree. It is either RPM's and/or crank case positive pressure giving the pump a "boost".

I just finished a build. All new engine with used gm pump. Ported with one shim on spring. spinning engine over without plugs in quickly built over 50 psi pressure. This is a very easy way to prime engine and takes the worry out of waiting for pressure. I have done this on many builds. I doubt it that it is your pump...they are simple devices that work unless gears are broken. Barbell problem, front plug, o ring, something like that.

so there seems to be a mixed feeling if priming needs to be done or not. I don't see any risk in doing so but why would someone not?
