Default 6.0 build help needed

I am beginning a low buck rebuild and need some advise:
this is going into a mud only heavy *** truck.

i have a stock 6.0 truck motor, low miles bottom end with 317 heads on it.

my plans so far are reuse stock bottom end w katech rod bolts and new bearings and oil pump.

my questions:
should i use the 317 heads or a set of 243s that i have off of a 5.3 and have them milled?i dont want compression over 10.5:1.
how much should i have milled off heads?
which head gaskets should i use?
does milling heads create any issues with pushrods(assuming id buy new),or intake mating up/sealing?

any suggestions on a camshaft??
i have a good z06 cam,any good with this setup???

thanks
Andy

I would recommend using the 243 heads, the 317s just won't get you enough compression. Is there any reason why you don't want to go higher then 10.5:1? These motors can typically go up to 11.5:1 before pump gas becomes an issue. I would recommend using the Gm stock 6.0l gasket for this type of build. Milling excessively can cause issues with sealing but as long as you don't get too crazy with it everything should still match up. I would recommend measuring pushrod length once everything is ready to put together, milling will effect that.

You can use the z06 cam if you like but I wouldn't expect it to pick up a ton of power, they aren't that much larger then stock. If you want to pick up some decent power I would go with a small 220/220 or something similar. A cam like that will have lots of low end and midrange power, which is what I am guessing you are looking for.

thanks,
as far as low c.r.? i was just trying to make a little more power and not
affect the reliability,so sounds like a little more is ok.
any ideas on how much to keep c.r. where i want?? .030,.040???

thanks for the pushrod and cam info.
yes i am wanting to keep the power on the low end as much as possible.

any other reccomendations are GREATLY appreciated.

6.0s eat up cams compared to 5.3s or 5.7s. I don't know why that is but I would easily suggest a 228R for you.

I would shoot for 11.0:1 compression if possible, that will leave you with a nice responsive, torquey motor that will still work on pump gas. I would not go any thinner then a .040" gasket, anything thinner will not give enough quench. I would go with std bearings unless you have to grind on your crank. IMO for what you are looking to do the 228r would be too big, something with a little less duration would work better.

with this setup, and head gasket, how much should i have milled from
the 243 heads to reach 11.0:1 cr?

IT is an lq9,stock truck motor.
ive found the stock head gasket thickness about .051
and figuring ill mill aproc .030 off the heads and still be safe..

so if its free, and ive got the motor apart.

will the z06 cam be worth installing???

i am trying to do this super low-buck,just to make a few events this fall, and am building a stroker thru the winter months,so any input is awesome..thanks!!

z06 cam work fine. runs good. in 6.0s
.030 is a good amount to mill. any more may cause intake to heads alignment issues.

When you say "mud only heavy *** truck" are you talking about mud drags or just woods driving with your buddies? Also what do you consider heavy?
