Default GM LS7 Heads - Is it worth porting them?

Is it worth porting stock LS7 GM heads on a C6Z (I have all of the other bolt ons along with a Cam)...

Please advise

Thank you

Yes we definately think so. We have been porting on the stock castings for quite awhile now with quite a bit of success. We are usually looking to pick up anywhere between 25-35 rwhp over the stock heads. We have had a couple cars go over 600rwhp with those heads and a properly specced cam.

Absolutely! The factory head has great potential, it just needs quality machine work & a more appropriate port design to make big power. As with anything, it depends on the work itself, but there are significant gains to be had. With our 280cc full CNC work we typically see ~600rwhp SAE w/ HR grinds that still drive well on stock short blocks. If you'll tolerate a little more cam, something still drivable, then 610-625 is doable. Thus far the highest #'s our customers have reported have been just shy of 700rwhp SAE NA w/ our HR valve train.

We're currently revising our site, but our old LS7 page has a few pics & dyno graphs customers have sent to us. Current porting options are on our LS7 shop page.

If you're looking for a small bump, you can just mill them. However, they've certainly got the potential to make big #'s if that is what you are after.

You can run a search for my user name & see several 600rwhp heads/cam LS7 engines we've done using our PRC LS7 cnc ported heads. not to mention we offer cnc porting of customers cores for a very reasonable price!!

Well hell yeah.....25 whp guaranteed on stock castings....you will have to run a pretty big cam to hit the 600 whp mark....I did a lot of research bf i did the heads on my z06, the heads you have are the best!

A good head & proper valve train will manage ~600rw without going to a grind that sacrifices drivability.

yeah i dont doubt it...."off the shelf" is off the shelf and thats what im running...Im running lgx4 with wcch making 575 whp with around 520 torque...It is a street machine....Im sure if i went with a bigger cam i could hit the 600 mark with ease. I just didnt want to change the cam bc i have kind of gotten use the the one i have.

I'll find out sooner or later. Just put a QM black mamba cam in the car. Will probably do some WCCH or PRC heads in a few months.

I don't recall which lobes the X4 uses offhand. For reference, we tend to make ~600rwhp with cams milder than the "G6X3" which is 23X/24X. Of course, if you're already at 575, another 20-30hp may not be that noticeable. As you said, it's a street machine and we quickly go beyond what is useful on a radial and unprepared surface with these setups. Still fun though.

True. I made 535hp. sae cam only and boltons and right around 485 torque. Heads and intake gained forty rwhp...The big surprise was gaining 30 ft1b torque...So overall i was happy...When i ported the heads on my ls3 i didnt gain any torque at all!

Do you guys typical do a full port/polish/valve job, with the addition of machining the deck down .030" or so to boost compression?

We have customers go anywhere from .010" to .050" depending on goals. A customer called a week or so ago & just did the PRC CNC porting exchange & gained 35rwhp over the stock cnc ported heads. I'll check into how much he milled his set.
