Default Help me identify this engine

A guy has a Vortec 6000 out of a 2008 Silverado for sale. It has VVT, DOD, an aluminum block and 243 heads. LY6 would be iron block and L76 would be square port heads. Anybody got any idea what this engine might be? I won't see it until this weekend so I don't have casting numbers yet.

Is the truck still with the drive train? Check the RPO numbers in the glove box.

If it has 243 heads its a 5.3L.

Thanks for all the help guys. I finally got in contact with the owner and found out about this mystery engine. It is called and LFA and this is the info from Wikipedia.

LFA
The Vortec 6000 LFA is a Generation IV small block V8 truck engine. The LFA variant is used in the GM's hybrid GMT900 trucks and SUVs. Major features include Active Fuel Management, a late-intake valve timing system, and a higher 10.8:1 compression ratio. It produces 332 hp at 5100 rpm and 367 lb·ft (498 N·m) at 4100 rpm.

LFA applications:

2008-present Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
2008-present GMC Yukon Hybrid
2009-present Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
2009-present Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid
2009-present GMC Sierra Hybrid

Mystery solved.

I am going to buy it for my 6.0 build as it is an aluminum block. I already have LS2 valley and front covers. From there, it should be just like any other LS1 to LS2 conversion. Get the harness extentions and mount the LS1 type knock sensors on the side of the block.

The LFA does have the 58X reluctor wheel and the 4X cam sensor so you either need the converter box from SLP (I think) or to change the reluctor to 24X and use a 1X cam sprocket with the LS2 front cover.

Thanks again for all the help.

You are right about it being an LFA. Just FYI, you might put cam bearing replacement at the top of the list....

#PIP4525A: SES Light Blue Exhaust Smoke Misfire Oil Consumption And/Or Fouled Number 1 Spark Plug - Replace Engine - keywords bearing camshaft deposits economy HP2 LFA light miss no P0300 P0301 repeat replace - (Feb 11, 2009)

Models: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

2008-2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid, Tahoe Hybrid

2008-2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid, Yukon Hybrid

with 6.0L Engine (RPO LFA)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Some customers may complain of an engine misfire, oil consumption, blue exhaust smoke, and/or an SES light. Upon inspection, oil deposits will be found on the #1 spark plug causing cylinder 1 to misfire and set DTCs P0300 and/or P0301. Typically, this will not occur until the vehicle has accumulated at least 8,000 miles. This may be the result of excess oil splashing onto the #1 cylinder wall due to a worn #1 cam bearing. This excess oil may eventually get into the combustion chamber and foul the #1 spark plug causing the engine misfire and SES light

No. LY6 is a 6.0 iron block engine used in the HDs. L92/LS3 and LSA/LS9 are 6.2 Alum block. Not the exact same though.

They don't. The thread is about a 6.0 anyway.

I got one of these motors because they replaced it at a dealership...I bought it as a core.
I'm interested in what cam options there are for this motor and any other things that need to be done to get some power outta this thing.

They have VVT and AFM. I am getting rid of both of them and going to a standard 3 bolt 1X cam. There are several other changes that must be made in deleting the VVT and AFM. The 243 heads are good castings and the compression is good at 10.8. Seems to me that they are mostly cam-challenged.

An LS2 is a gen 4 motor. So is an LS7 or an LS3, which use the same cover.
