Default Help me choose a cam for a LS3 cause I have no clue!!!

When it comes to choosing a cam, I have absolutely no clue. I didn't when I had a sbc and I don't know now. I've emailed and pm'd a few different people about prices and suggestions, but haven't heard back from any of them.

For those that don't know my build, I have a L92 and am leaning towards getting rid of the VVT and getting a Speartech harness. (it's been a long back and forth decision trying to decide whether or not to keep the VVT and am still not 100% certain) The motor is stock and I have a stock LS3 intake with a LS3 throttle body which has been ported and polished. I have Stainless Works long tube headers and will be running a TKO600 with 3.70 gears in the back. I was looking at the Comp Cams camshafts, but they don't say much about them so didn't do me much good as like I said, I'm a cam idiot . I found a cam from Texas Speed which says it adds 80hp to the stock motor. The specs are: 231/236 .641"/615" 111 LSA. Here's a link to the cam: http://texas-speed.com/shop/item.asp...=1057&catid=44 They have a cam package where you can get the cam, double springs and push rods for $699.

What are you thoughts on that cam. I want the engine to have the classic muscle lumpy sound, but don't want it to be too much cam as the car is going to be 99% of the time street driven. Or is there another cam you would recommend. I need to make up my mind fairly soon as there is a 3 week wait for a Speartech harness and I want to make a day trip to the border to pick up parts in early June. Thanks in advance.

i when with a comp lsr269 for my ls3. tech at comp recommended it for my set-up. im doing a pro touring 72 camaro. i went small on the cam because ill be running power brakes w 4 piston calipers on 13" drilled-slotted rotors all around. the specs are:219-235 at .050 /607-621 lift on a 113 lobe sep. my engine is a stock ls3 crate from gm, 1 7/8 longtube huslers, vic jr intake w fast EZ fuel injection. sorry i cant give any feedback on how i like it as im still in the build stage on mine as well. good luck !

I have a Futral spec Cam motion grinde 232/236-646/612@114LSA that came out of my 2002 Z28 camaro for sale. $250.00 plus shipping. PM me if interested. I went 10.90@123mph The cam is like brand new with no marks what so ever on it. I'm selling it because I am building a bigger badder motor and went with another custom cam for the new build.

That came with the stock intake might not be the best. You should have a little more split in the duration and open up the l/c a little. I would be looking at 220/236 and have your lif down a little at .620 ish with a l/c of 113+3. If it was a victor style then I would go 226/236 same lift on a 110+4

Keep it around an 8* split.

Default split

the secret in the ls3 heads that many has come around to is in the split, 16 to 19 more dur in the ext than the intake, another thing when selecting a cam is not to go to low on the duration, as it will make for a small cam, i say 228 to 231 in the intake....

most of the research ive seen on camshafts for the LS3 show that a short duration on the intake side helps keep port veocity up on those huge intake runners. it might run out of air alittle up top but will make that pro-touring nova much more fun to drive on the street. added benefit, like i said in my first response, those big power brakes will be much happier. the long exhaust duration will give u a nice choppy idle for the sound u want.

I've run 4 different cams with the L92 heads. None that worked well were over a 10 degree split. The sweet spot on the intake side seems to be between 230 and 234. Keep the CR between 11.0 and 11.4 or so so you can run as much spark lead as possible.

A cam like a 230-238 112 would work well.

Just my $.02

a 111LSA is going to concentrate the power band, making it peakier and shorter lived per say than say a 113LSA with the same specs. For the street I would do a 112 or 113 LSA, IMO.

I have a 227/235 @ .050 (LSL lobes) on a 113+4

If i were to do it again I would probably do a 112+4 but its not a big deal

226/234 .598/.612" 114LSA custom cam using EPS on intake and LXL lobes on the exhaust. He figures it should make 525-550 flywheel hp, 450-460 rwhp. Since my build is a pro-touring car, the cam will have a good street manners (I'm running power brakes so that's a positive) and will have a wide power band.
