Default max oil temp

Hi

I have put a standard LS3 in my TVR griffith with MAST ecu. I have oil to water cooler, and ecu has raised max revs to 6800. it is dry sumped.

Car running very well and i am starting to win! However if driven hard on track day or testing, oil temp rises to 130 degrees. Water temp stays at 92.(Oil temp in sump 125)

130 seems a bit high to me. should I be adding another cooler?

Will MAST ecu record very high oil temp as fault.

Many thanks for advice

Matthew

You might want to convert those # into farenheit.

Thank you

Ok. Oil max of 130 is 266F and water temp of 92 is 197F

That seems a little high since you are running a cooler. My car used to see 240 temps with no cooler. I added a forced air cooler and my temps stay around 200-230 now. You might add a fan to your set up. Or don't run a water to oil just an air to oil. The water is adding heat. How big is the cooler and where is it mounted.

220-240 sounds about right. Not sure if 266 is that bad but with the cooler i would think your oil temps would be a little lower. I think the highest i have ever hit was 250 and that was with no cooler and running the hell out of it for a good 10 minuets strait.

Thank you.
Yes those are my thoughts I would prefer it to be lower but im not sure if 266 will do any harm.
It is a hillclimb car so runs flat out from cold (or as warm as I can get it idling in padock) hence oil water cooler helps to initially heat the oil and is then supposed to keep temp reasonable.
I have no problem with oil temps when hillclimbing or sprinting as runs are short. Using 6800 in each gear seems to be the cause of the heat it is also a relatively new engine perhaps 2000miles( all flat out!)(ecu records 88 hours run time and 610 starts)
The dry sump system may also add a little heat I suppose. Extra coolers also add weight!

So my question remains, is it safe to run good oil this hot and would MAST ecu record excessive heat as a fault?

Many thanks

Matthew

I don't see a problem with that hot and synthetic oil. It will be a bit thinner at that temp though. What weight oil did your builder recommend with that engine? You may want to talk with them about possibly going with a little higher viscosity.

Edit: I really see no problem if you are changing it often also. I tend to change my oil after a day of racing. Whether I think it needs it or not.

As TurboAv points out, it depends on what oil.

Mineral...it would be on the way to the graveyard at 130C.

Mobil 1 for example AOK at 170C. Other syns, semi syns, somewhere in the middle. But generally all good to at least 130C.

Generally use Valvoline 5:30 fully synthetic

Engine builder is GM, it was a new crate engine just with drysump and MAST ecu added.

I change oil every 1000miles

Thank you

Those temps are nothing for synthetic. Both seem to be in line.
