418 ls3 stroker gains
#3
semi budget.....i was planning on getting a crate motor from tsp....when i looked at it, the standard ls3 was only like a couple hundred cheaper than there stroked setup..........so im like hell i can get the stroker, pickup 40-50hp there, andi can maybe make my money backby buying slighlty worse heads and a used FAST.......im looking for about 525-580 rwhp.....so ill gostrokd ls2/3, with some as casts, vindicator cam, lts, lid, and a fast....should easily meet that goal.

I'm a firm believer in LS3 heads, so even though they're more expensive I think they'd be better in the longrun, so you can run a slightly less aggressive cam considering this might go in a street car? Or is this purely for the track? It's worth the money to have Pat G spec out your cam. He knows his stuff.

You will definetly hit the 525 whp with a 418, but you will need alot of help for a 418 to get there.
I would atleast go cnc ported ls3 heads, and you definetly need a bigger maf and intake setup or you will have no gains in the higher RPMS that you could be making hp.
a 625 lift cam is very streetable in a engine that size and with a good tune will definetly be fun on the road.
I hope you plan for a rear end swap as well cause the stocker wont hold it, and depending on what rear you go with you will have more HP loss threw the heaver drivtrain.
here is a example. I am going with a 416 11.1 compression ls3 with cnc ls3 heads, callis compstar internals and yella terra rockers. I am adding longtubes with a 3 inch catted y pipe into a 4 inch merge and running a eletric 4 inch cutout to take away the exhaust restiction. I am expecting to hit about 550 whp
I am having my ls3 intake ported along and matching it with a 95 mm tb and a 100mm maf and 104mm intake.
Now the price difference will change if you go with a STOCK ls3 instead of a FORGED ls3 from texas speed.
a stock ls3 shortblock will be alot cheeper than a forged 418 but a forged ls3 will only be a few hundred cheeper.
I would go with the 418 and do it once, you wont be happy if your already thinking about the bigger cubes and dont get them.
plus you will have so much nicer torque curves

I'm using a comp 243/259 .624 lift on both sides on a 114+3 using LsR lobes. I also went with LPE cnc'd Ls3 heads and a FAST 102 ported and intake matched runners. I'm using 2" kooks headers and 3.5 kooks ypipe with a 4" merge and I also will be using a 4" cutout. So we shall see in a few weeks. I'm also shooting for 550+ or bust!
But I'll be going speed density, I think the benefits are better.
