Question How did I chew up my cam and thrust plate? Calling all cars!

-- Texas Speed 408 Iron Block
-- Futral cam
-- Manley LS1,-6, Gen III Double Roller Timing Set w/ Captive Torrington and 9 Keyway Crankshaft Sprocket (Stock Length)

Rear cover has no marks so we are wondering how the front of this cam got chewed up. Has anyone seen this before?

I've shown Texas the pics and they stated the either the cam was defective or the timing sprocket was defective.

I am waiting on a call from Futral but Alans's email stated "Front of cam looks fine behind the galled up metal from the cam thrust plate. Poor oiling or insuffencient clearance between cam and thrust plate."

What are the proper clearances?

Is this the right timing set?

How did the thrust plate get so chewed up?

This is the 2nd time I have scene this. I think GM might have made some backing plates to soft or did get harden right. It's a weird deal. I had this happen to a local guy who did his own work. We used a Pro-Gear timing chain set also.

He noticed oil in his oil late summer, but did the work last summer to it. I sent the cam out and had it checked for taper and it checked ok. The timing chain checked ok also. It was either operator/install error or a bad retainer plate.
