cost of building Ls3
cost of building Ls3 I am in the process of installing H/C/I on my 98 ls1 with over 130k miles. I would like to start an ls3 build for the future, but I am unsure if it would be very beneficial over purchasing a crate motor. I would be happy with a light build which will pass the sniffer.
Has anyone prepared a spreadsheet or cost comparison for a complete build? I would be interested on any input you guys may have.

Correct. This would be starting with an ls3 block (6.2). The main objective is to end up with a smog friendly ls3. Power goals would be around 440-460. I wouldn't mind an ls variant with similar characteristics.
It depends on what u start with. Ho w about a l92. I am in the same process and if you are patient and look around you can get things cheep enough. So far I got engine 100k with noise turn out to be lifter and cam 100$ gm hot cam kit 500$ used maf 60$ front cover like 60$ rear cover 60$ rings (freshin up) 120$ gasket bolts around ? Ls3 intake with rail and inn.300$ using ls1 from car pan. Then ls2 cam sprocket like 40$ high volume oil pump 80$. Will need efi live tune? Expect 460 horse. I hope.

also the summit crate engine ls3 was dyno'd at 490 (crank horsepower) with headers and an electric water pump. I just read the article in a chevy magazine. So that's an option, you won't find many if any ls3's in the junk yard so I really don't think there is a "cheap" way of doing an ls3 build yet..

The ls3 is a car motor. Ready to go in other cars for the most part. More desirable. Mire money normally. The l92 ( short and sweet ) is out of a truck has truck oil pan truck intake and variable cam. Other than valves and half point of compression it is a ls3. So if you can pick one up cheep you could be ahead of the game. That is depending on where you want to be.

That is the problem. The L92 motor is also very desirable and the junk yard prices reflect that. However one might be able to find a good deal on one.
