Default File Fit Rings are to Include.. Napier Seconds...Right?

already screwed up one ring because i assumed it was oversized [+.005] like the package says. checked the others and they are right at the gap i need -.0001/2

that seems.. odd.. to me

[Total Seal AP ring set with Napier Second]

is that normal..?

yep, the whole 2nd ring set is fubar. even without filing i got over a 014 gap

looks like ill be calling them monday.. :sigh:

Huh? What is your bore size? As an example for a street n/a build, Wiserecommends .0045in per inch of bore. That's about .018in for a 4.030 bore. Why are you trying to get a .0005 gap? That will butt rings for sure.

4.02. i wasnt trying to get 5 tenthou, i was going off a suggested .01407 gap (using Total Seals "guide"). that doesnt exactly matter when unfiled i get .014 to over .016 (closer to.018 or so).

btw, these are the second rings, not the top rings (those are set at .018 may go to .022 so i can put some boost on it later). for everything but nitrous, T/S recommend bore X .0035 on the second ring.

I thought second ring gap generally needs to be wider than the top ring?

second ring sees a lot less gasses and heat that the top ring does.

Many run the second ring wider than top, this is personal preference.
A .005 over set will normally butt and have no ring gap. You should verify your bore size.

i already did the top rings, which i had no problems with. like you said, they butt when not filed. thats why i think the 2nd ring set is the wrong size.

That's wierd that they recomend a smaller 2nd ring gap- but thier website tech page is confusing in general. ha ha

Usually the second ring runs a wider gap to combat first ring flutter. The general rule of thumb I have always followed for N/A is bore x .004 for the 1st ring and bore x .005 for the second ring.

So you should be running a .016-.017 on the 1st ring and .020-.021 on the 2nd.
