Default Cam selection, 6.0/LS3 build

Looking for a little help in picking a camshaft for my build. The current plans are for a 6.0 with LS3 heads and intake. I'm looking a for a large, but streetable cam. Down the road, hopefully next winter, I'll be looking at doing a stroker build on it, but I'm just going to stick with the stock 6.0 block for now. What off-the-shelf cams would be good to look at for my build?

Thanks

would help if you state more about your build such as ls2, lq4, lq9, ly6, etc (to have a better idea of compression working with and figure in possible head milling options), stall and gears you intend to use, vehicle type, etc....

My fault for not adding the extra info. it's an LQ4, I may go with a thinner head gasket to try and bring compression up a hair. It will be bolted up to a T56, and put in a Trans Am with 4.10 gears. My goal is a high performance street motor with the option of making it to a track if I feel like it. Assuming I get done by my goal date, it will see ~15000 miles next year.

With that small bore your cam selection is very limited along with your ptv clearance. You would be better off staying cathedral.

An ls3 also has a way bigger bore for those heads though. Dont expect near those results or proper ptv clearance

well my old ly6 ran 6.18 on just 150 shot yes a ls3 runs harder but no reason a 6.0 lq4 ls3 head wont run

something like a 224 230 590 590 on 108 check ptv and roll

mill heads .030 or .015/use .040 gasket to bump compression to approx. 10:2 and run eps 226-234, 598-600, 113+4 cam. simple as that for 450-465 rwhp.

I'd like to stay away from machine work for now if possible. This cam would basically be just to get me by for the year until I do the bottom end build next winter. Anyone know anything about CompCams LSR or Thumpr cams and how they might stack up?

I do still have my stock LS1 heads and LS6 intake. I could use them if it's safer than doing the LS3 top end without the bore/stroke to the block.

Youre not gonna make huge power with ls3 heads in your situation. The large intake valve is so close to the cylinder wall that you wont be able to mill much for compression without flycutting. The ls3 heads have a larger chamber hence loss in compression.

You can still hope for good power using these ueads, but I cant stress to you enough the importance of picking the right cam.

Try eps for a cam, they do a lot of 6.0/ls3 combos.

Op im building my setup the same as you basically. I know you said you want to stay away from machine work, but you need to get the compression up. Im using an LS2 block and rotating assembly, pro comp CNC ls3 heads and ported ls3 intake. I dont want to give out my cam specs, but i had Ed Curtis custom grind me a cam. 23x/24x .63x/.63x on a 112+x. Its bigger than the other cams being specd here by a good margin. I told him i was decking the heads .030 and did NOT wxnt to fly cut and this is what he sent me. Take it for what its worth OP.

You might checkout the new PRC 255 cc aftermarket casting LS3 heads. They move roughly 370cfm and have a smaller than stock runner size. Not to mention the relocated valves will help to keep head airflow high where the stock head likes to drop a lot of airflow in 4" bore applications.

What's different about the pistons that should concern me with the piston to valve clearance? I can understand cutting it close with the valves and cylinder walls, are there different reliefs in the pistons?

just ptv clearance is tight on *some* cams with ls2/ls3. not saying your will be (but you should def measure to be sure)

ideally if you flycut your pistons some, you could mill your heads for more compression

Ok, I got ya now. Any idea how much valve lift might be ok on this setup this setup without having to take it to a shop?

its not lift thats gives you the trouble. its the duration and overlap. unfortunately, I dont have the answer for you, but im sure someone else can chime in and give you the approx limits

from another thread thats very similar:
