Default Opinions On this cam

I would like to have some input on this cam I had specked for my combo, The setup is an LS3 with a 4.00 stroke, 416CI, 12.5 pistons, stock LS3 heads and intake, Its going in a C5 with an A4, 3800 stall, 3.42 gears. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

so if im reading your info correctly the cam is a 239/251 .621"/.632" on 114lsa

well i will say it will sound badass but im not to sure of how it will pull on the streets down low especially with the 3.42 gears. Seems to me to be a lot of overlap for the streets without being dog under 3k. i know you have the ci to support it but still. what do you do with this car (toy/dd/ect)?

Why so much cam?

Definitley over camming the car for street duty.

The car is a street/strip car, Not a Daily. I had Pat G spec it for me and gave him all the info on the car. It will also have some nitrous run through it on occasion. I wish I would of ask this question before I had it ground now.

It should be a great cam for the spray, still decent NA. Pretty aggressive for the street but maybe okay since you have a pretty high stall converter. Definitely gonna pull up top, probably pretty soggy down low.

That is no where near being over cammed for a 4" stroke. Listen to Pat G he knows what he is doing.

If it actually stalls at 38 then it will cook me thinks but your going to have to buzz it to get there, A4 I assume 4l60e? Dicey at high RPM....

"416CI, 12.5 pistons"

Cam size sounds good to me. A lot of cubic inches and some compression thrown in to boot.

TOO MUCH OVERLAP AND REVERSION. Just like I told you before. If you would get your overlap and reversion in check you would make more power with your combos but you are listening to people who have said they only make on average 460rwhp with these heads.

Especially for a street car with 3.42 gears A4. He is not going to ride around on spray 99% of the time.

If he installs the cam, then he should take it to Pat G and have him tune it for him as well.

I still say he is going overboard. There are other issues that come with that much lift, that dome piston etc. I don't think the OP is ready to deal with the constant maintenance.

You don't order that kind of cam then have second thoughts.

Definitely not too much cam for a strip-oriented street car. 17 degrees of overlap in a 416 is equivalent to 10 degrees of overlap in a 6.2L LS3 and 6 degrees of overlap in a 5.7L LS1. None of those overlap numbers would be considered excessive in the smaller engine. Amazing how nicely cubes gobble up the overlap.

The lobes are not high maintenance lobes. They are HUC lobes which are a marine style lobe made for exceptional valve control and long spring life. They are not to be confused with fast LSL/LSR lobes. This will be a great cam for the combo. Seen it make killer power time and time again.

I'm glad you got my message Patrick I know you don't post much any more. I agree 100% on the events and the overlap. I really like the huc lobes for boost or heavier valves as I know you do also.

I normally add 5-7 degrees to my events and overlap when I go from a cam for a 3.622" to one for a 4" stroke and it seems you do too.

The longer stroke will increase piston dwell time at tdc and bdc which will help eat up duration and overlap. That cam is by far not too much for a 416. I have seen similar cams in max effort 6.2's.

Also, with the high static compression, if you decrease overlap, you will drive the dynamic up, which will in turn drive power down by limiting timing.

Car needs more gear and different intake manifold. Will you run race fuel?

Not a cam I would run but I've only been working with those heads since 2006.
