Compression Check while engine is out?

Compression Check while engine is out? I'm trying to determine if a long block is good......
While the long block is on a stand can I just....
0. Make sure it has oil.
1. remove all the plugs
2. Install a plug one at a time and check compression by
Turning the crank with an impact gun and measuring with a gauge?
Has anyone ever done this?
Is there a better way to do it?
The engine(LQ9) looks really clean.....and I don't want to tear it apart if I don't have to.....I'd rather just slap some ported heads on it and go.

I wouldnt use an impact to turn it, I dont think that you would get a fast enough rotation to get a good reading. I am not sure that there would be much rotation at all, the best bet is to use the starter hooked up to a battery.
