Default Mast 305 head casting flaws!

Well i finally got my Mast 305 heads and when i looked them over i found some fairly deep pitting around a intake port right where the gasket seals and a bad casting mark on the other head right at the top front that rolls onto the gasket edge far from the quality i was expecting anyone else seen these issues with them? I'm not happy at all with what i see!

Obviously wont hurt anything but yes for what they cost I wouldn't be too happy. Quality control would get an ear full.

I did not talk to Mast i purchased them through a vendor so i'm going to let them handle that. I went with the Mast's because everyone recommended them as being Quality heads but to let them go out like that is very sad to say the least!

Edelbrock welds on theirs to make them look ok.

I would take a couple flaws vs welding

I would not be happy also.

If they are flawed like that externally I would certainly worry about internal casting porosity flaws.

There is even a small pit inside atleast one intake bore not that it is a huge deal but what's that say overall about the castings?

What it says is that they aren't taking the time with the casting that they should and the material they are pouring isn't as "clean" as it needs to be prior to pouring.....definitely something that should be brought to MAST's attention!!! I would be really pissed if I was you....what happens if you go to get some port work done and the porter runs into a huge void between intake or exhaust runners....not saying it will happen but I sure as hell wouldn't want to risk that...

Yep not happy at all with these supposed to be high end heads that look worse than a set of stockers I have sitting here! I have the vendor contacting Mast but they also agree they look bad hopefully Mast sees this as poor QC and resolves it!

Tagging along this thread - trying to decide between these or the TSP 285cc heads.

So far this is what i hear Mast's responce to the problem=
They said their QC does try to ensure that the heads have minimal flaws and will still perform but they cannot reject every head just for that.

I was just wondering where the heads i got ended up on the flaw scale min. or perfect?
They did offer to swap them out but go figure they are 3 weeks out and what if the other set has min. flaws?????

And i was going to get the TSP 285cc heads but everyone said go Mast am i just the lucky one to get a min. flawed set?

Do you mind sharing photos of the combustion chambers?

Any pitting or inclusions in the intake runners?

That's a bad deal man. Sorry you're having to deal with it. If they are just cosmetic, three weeks is a long time to wait on another set that could be flawed too. If it's more than cosmetic, no question return them and get a new set. That's a lot of damn money you spent and you should, in my opinion, get a perfect set of heads. Hope it all works out for you.

I did see some small pits in the runners kinda hard to get pics of but i found all this after 5 min's of inspection and the castings could have hollow spots but who knows i'm not willing to chance it for the coin they cost.
I really hope the vendor works this out and can speed up Mast's time line they should be helpful considering their name is on these things and they should have never left the way they look!

unless its made of billet youre highly likely to have some flaws somewhere very hard to control;factory parts can have lots of it look how long they last

Although it may not appear pretty some porosity in ports decks etc wont affect anything most times.

Long as it seals drive it.

Let me guess, you posted this thread before you talked to MAST right?

I'd expect those type of flaws from an inexpensive set of heads but that's not the case here. In my experience porosity like that is never a good thing. Have they been impregnated?

Did they offer to exchange them in favor of castings without flaws? Or offer you some sort of rebate or discount? If all else fails you could take the issue up with your credit card company.

Pretty much all castings have flaws but usually they are unnoticed. Exchange them if it makes you feel better but they are still top of the line cylinder heads. I would run them and be on with it. It takes 3 weeks because the ones they have are spoken for. Actually 3 weeks is pretty good for them.
