Default Question: Recipe for 450rwhp?

I've got a '99 blazer with an 07 5.3 swapped in. It's going through a built 4l65e.

It's a daily driver, so I'm not wanting nos, turbo, etc... What's the best combo to attain my goal of 450rwhp and maintain a reliable daily driver?

Not wanting to bore it out or stroke it.

You're basically asking how to lose weight, but you don't want to work out or change your diet.

If you want to get a 5.3L to make 450whp without a power adder, it won't be very fun as a daily driver. It really needs the extra displacement or power adder if you want to maintain reliability and street manners.

prc237's, ms4, ported fast 102/102, underdrive pulley, 1 7/8ths longitudes, x pipe, and dumps, and a spot on tune would probably get you there.

Thanks for the advice. I might rethink my not wanting to bore or stroke...

I wouldn't get so hung up on a rwhp number that your going to make a setup that's not going to be a good DD

The setup mentioned above by roninsonic - sure it might get you there but your gonna be in the 5500+ rpm range and higher to make power with an ms4 in a 5.3 not to mention spend quite a chuck of money.

The 5.3 is a good motor, get a decent intake, stall and gears , full exhaust and it might surprise you how well it drives. Mines pretty stock right now with just an ls6 cam and ls1 intake / stalled 4l80
Im fixing to upgrade to the ls6 intake , janzer ported tb, cpw long tubes , new stall by yank the one in it now is way too loose , 8.8 swap with 3.73 gears. It should be a really fun daily and I dont have to spin it to the moon the see that shes got power.
If you are dead set on a 450 rwhp number in a DD Id suggest starting with a 6.0 , there's just no replacement for displacement unless you go power adder.

i agree with 3rdgen a dyno number is just a number! just build a good driver combo and if after that you still want more then stroke it or spray it.

Don't let 'em get you down... The combo I spec'd above will be perfectly reliable and streetable. a yank 4000SS or similar converter makes that cam pretty easy to drive on the street AND retains lockup.

Keep in mind, though, that my DD doesn't have heat, AC, or a front sway bar, so what your idea of a DD is may differ from mine. It WILL be reliable though.

what you speced would be a pretty good setup if he had a 6.0, but a 237 head is way to big for a 5.3 and requires a minimum 4in bore and while you could use a ms4 on a 5.3 it would make no bottom end to mid range and would not be very fun to drive on the street

um, actually the "237" is their cnc'd ported version of their 225, which will go on that 5.3 JUST fine, and that MS4 would start waking up around 4K or so.... Which happens to be why I recommended a nice converter that would match the setup. A good 4k converter paired with a good tune, he won't give a **** about where his midrange is- Every time he touches the loud pedal magic will happen. Autos don't NEED low-end.

One thing I DID forget, OP- GEARS. Throw in some 4.10's on a 28" tire (or 3.90's on a 26"). FUN TIMES.

It may be all fine and dandy to drive hard with the big converter, but in no way would that stall and cam be easy to drive normally around low RPM and at idle.

Is it doable...sure. But not fun and easy. Will smell like ***, get terrible gas mileage and even with a damn good tune it will surge all over the place under 2k.

And good luck fitting a 2.100" intake valve on the stock 5.3 bore. That **** won't fit on the 5.7 bore...
