So im installing a new cam. From what i remember the stock cam seemed flush, while this cam seems recessed into the engine more. Is this normal for the cam to be recessed in like this? Maybe the timing gear will bring it back into position.
edit can someone move this to the correct forum? this is an ls2...

I realize the cam retaining plate is not installed. But the cam just seems recessed a little as if its a few mm short. I'm trying to see if this is normal... Id rather double check now before putting everything back together.

The cam retaining plate and the timing set you use will locate the cam in the correct position, at that point you really only need to worry about camshaft endplay. Some timing sets like Cloyes, use a torrington bearing behind the cam sprocket. If you have one, dont forget to put that in. Pushing the cam all the way back is only bumping against the rear cover, it was flush when you took it apart because the cam was located in the correct spot from the retaining plate and cam gear.
