Cam/compression questions for my 430 build... Hey guys. I'm doing an ERL dry sleeved 430 with some PRC LS7 265's... my cam is custom spec'd cam motion grind, 243/259 .667"/.645" 113.5+4...

How much static compression can I get away with on this thing with California's 91 pump gas?

The other couple of tenths are not worth it for the small horsepower gain. I have a friend with the same motor I have here in California but he just upgraded his heads and went with 12:1 compression. He adds Torco octane booster to keep detonation in check. The reason he went that route is he participates in Drag Week which I believe starts in about a week.
91 octane compression... With the cam you have advanced 4 degrees I wouldn't go over 11 to 1 no way no how so you can run some timing won't do you any good to run lots of compression if you have to detune to do so.
10.7 would be my choice if I was doing that build to hopefully run 26 degrees wide open throttle total advance cause I know it will make some power while running happy.

I'd ask whoever will be tuning it. They'll know what will give you the best performance returns.
A lot will come into play to calculate static and dynamic compression. Chamber cc, head gasket thickness, piston to deck measurement, lobe centerlines...
You can get some decent, general ideas here on the forum of what you can get away with on Cali 91, but your tuner is who you should ultimately listen to.

I wouldn't ask the cam guy.....I'd ask my tuner.
Yeah.....low 11's with 91 octane. I would aim for about 11.2 or 11.3:1. I'd also want my quench to be in the .030" to .035" range.....but that's just me.

I've got a customer who's running 11.2 static with 9+(ish) dynamic. On AZ 91 octane. On the break-in tune it made 500/530 (418 stroker), very rich and only 18*. It's now up to in the mid 20's timing. No new dyno numbers. I spec'd the cam.
