Default Look at this DOD lifter

I bought a 2006 Buick Rainier LH6, unknown mileage from the junkyard. They said it ran but "made noise" so I decided to take a chance on it. When I got it the passenger valve cover and exhaust manifold were off. I pulled the heads today and there was a little water in two cylinders, probably from sitting at the junkyard. That head appears to have been off at some point because it had blue around where it mates to the block.

I'm not a mechanic so use simple explanation. This is one of the DOD lifters on that side. I'm assuming it should not come apart like this, or am I wrong? Is there anyway to diagnose a bad DOD lifter by taking the valve covers off without taking them out. The other lifters, the rollers and the cam all appear to look OK from first glance. What else should I be looking for?

Anyone?

Are these not supposed to come apart? What is supposed to keep them together? Or is this normal?

They are not supposed to come apart. That would probably make some noise. Do you plan on using the DOD? If not, now is a good time to delete it. If so, now is a good time to replace all the lifters.

No, I was planning on getting rid of that and the stock cam.

Any idea what fails that allows them to come apart?

Thanks!

Not sure. Haven't seen one do that before. I've seen a few get stuck in the collapsed position. Doesn't really matter though since you're getting rid of them. I am about to do the same on my 2008 trailblazer LH6. Oil pressure is starting to act up and while my lifters are still OK they are on borrowed time at 125k miles.
