Default Setting ls7 lifter preload, 7.315 checker plus preload?

I've been reading and searching but having some difficulty understanding how this works. I'm running a TSP V2 cam(232/234 598 lift 112lsa), and my stock 243's milled .010, with a 3 angle VJ and stock gm gaskets(.051 compressed). I upgraded to ls7 lifters also. The engine is a stock bottom end ls2.

So I dropped a stock pushrod in and tightened the rocker down until I couldn't pull/push the pushrod up/down. After that point it took about 1 and a half turns to get to 22ft lbs. Then I took a homemade adjustable pushrod, and came up with 7.315 length at zero lash. With that being said, I add in my desired preload of .085, and come up with 7.4, the factory length.

My question is for starters am I doing this right? I only question it because I figured with the VJ and milling and ls7 lifters I'd end up with something other than stock. I can compress the lifters by hand and they spring back up, so that's why I did the push/pull thing with my fingers rather than setting 0 lash like I normally would. Anyone wanna throw their 2 pennies in?

I understand that, but I guess what I'm asking is, since the lifters are new and I can push the pushrod down with my thumb, am I saying zero lash is when the pushrod is just barely tight between the rocker arm and pushrod? Again, my only reason for even posting this is because I find it off that I come up with needing 7.4 pushrods.

Better yet, zero lash is equal to zero preload, correct? Just no slack?
