Default Too much ring gap???

Hey everyone,

I was down at my machinists yesterday cleaning up parts for assembly and he had filed the rings already and they were at 0.026" Top and 0.022" Second.

It is a 4.030" bore LY6 with enginetech hyp LQ9 pistons and speed pro rings.

I told him I might want to do a 100shot down the road but still I think the rings are opened up way too big.

What do you guys think?

I was thinking 0.005" top and 0.0055" second so 0.020" and 0.022"

Almost every application I have seen required a larger second ring than top.

Is that overly gapped top ring going to effect anything that it is worth buying another set and redoing it?

Thanks

I personally would take it to another Machine shop/engine builder for a second Professional opinion... But, that does not seem right

Total seal recommends .0055 for top and second (so .022 for both) for up to a 150 shot, however I feel that at .020-.021 top and .022 bottom would be right on the money for just a 100 shot in a street car (especially if you'd had a stainless top ring). You're thinking is correct, .026 is definitely too wide. And to prevent any kind of ring flutter you want your 2nd ring as wide, or larger than the top.

What is going to be the down fall if I run the rings the way they are?

Since your top gap is .026 and your 2nd is .022, ring flutter for one (build up of gasses between the rings causing them to bounce or flutter), and excessive blowby which puts soot and unburnt fuel into the oil, as well as reduced efficiency and effective compression.

Yeah those ring gaps are all wrong. I would have done .022" top and .026" second.

Are you sure he had the measurements correct and did not mix them up?

Did you physically check or verify what he stated when you were there?

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The only way to save this ring set is to now open the secondaries to .030"
And run a crank case vac pump

OP, I would verify the top ring end gap, if it is .026, you could always call up the company and just get a new set of top rings to re-gap and keep the rest of the set.

thanks for the replies everyone.

I am picking up the short block on Saturday morning. I will then pull a couple pistons out and check the ring gaps. If they are as wide as he said I will pull them all out and replace them. I have ordered a second set of rings already and should be here Saturday. It was just strange because when he said the numbers I questioned him and said well is that not on the high side and his excuse was well you said possibly down the road of maybe using 100hp worth of nitrous and he was nervous with the hypereutectic pistons so wanted the rings gaps wide enough not to cause any issues. I even pulled up a chart from speedpro that recommends 0.050 for limited nitrous street/strip useage and 0.055 second and he still said well maybe that works for their piston and ring combination.

I don't know just sort of alarming/concerning.

So I just pulled out 3 pistons to see what the gaps were and tops were 0.022" and seconds were 0.025.

I think I can live with that. Must have heard him wrong.

Everyone agree?

I have a new set of rings that will be delivered tomorrow so money is not the issue just time. I could always save these rings for a turbo 6.0.
