Default What goes wrong on LS7 and what does it take to fix it?

Ive saw reference to valve issues on the LS7 engine from GM. Is that the only major problem with the engine, and if so what does it take to fix it? (replace the valve guides?) I am going to be replacing my engine, and am half tempted to get an LS7 pull out, but being on the high side of the budget fixing the issue cant be a major expenditure without breaking the budget.

Many thanks!

Other than the exhaust valve problem, the LS7 sleeves are known to crack pretty easily. If you find one of the rare used LS7 engines without a cracked sleeve, you really have to take it easy on the tune not to rattle it at all.

The most common fix to the valve problem is simply new guides, new exhaust valves, and cutting a new valvejob.

For the sleeve issue, you would need new sleeves.

We do get a lot of LS7 blocks with cracked liners. Depending on your application it would be a good investment to sleeve the block. We offer a couple sleeving options: a dry-sleeve set-up and our Superdeck System.
We also offer fully blueprinted short blocks. Let us know if we can be of any service.

Do you get many that are nearly stock? I think my long term goals for the engine would be something very mild, such as a small cam. Hopes being that by going ls7 Id get the displacement and oem redline to make my power for me, not wild builds, turbos, nitrous, or anything of the sort.

The stock dry sump oiling is garbage. You could convert it to wet sump and change the oil pan to an Fbody which would solve many issues plus be cheaper overall.

If you are just farting around on the street it won't be an issue. If road racing that's where the oiling issues will arise.

It's $2k+ in parts to remedy the issues. Aviad makes the oil pan baffle, external pump, etc.
Katech offers a better pump with billet cover, etc.

we get blocks that are nearly stock and also blocks that have had issues (hurt sleeves) if this is more of a street car the stock liners could be just fine. But our dry-sleeve set-up will ensure you don't run into liner issues in the future in case you decide to push it.

If it's in the budget, dry sleeve it and don't look back.

Our sleeves are 5.800" same as LS7. But the ductile iron is about 3-4 times stronger than the oem liners. We can also go out to a 4.185" bore for a monster N/A set-up.

At that point, why not just resleeve the block you already have?
