I'm guessing they just pulled the valve cover(s) off. It might be worth a little bit of time with a scope cam to look inside the cylinders and see how bad things are. At worst, you'll get some closure before you say goodbye. At best, you might decide you can get by with just a new head until you can put together the funds to go deeper.
