Default Forged???

After reading a ton on this forum and others, at what HP range do you need to go to forged crank and rods? I am only looking to build in the 500hp range, so do I need to up grade?

And I guess the pistons may need to be forged also???

For a 500HP build the stock components are more than adequate. It doesn't hurt to upgrade but for 500HP it is not required if the current parts, and or engine is in good condition.

It's alot more than HP range.

Compression, RPM, desired usage etc. all play in a big factor.

For example, a 14:1 8000rpm engine with 500hp will definitely need quality forged components if being constantly used at WOT and 8000rpm. Now the same 500hp but stock compression and used as a daily driver won't.

With stock pistons, the compression ratio can't be to high.

Thanks guys on the replies!

The engine I have is a L96 out of a '10 Express Van. It was completely dismantled when I bought it. That is why I thought I would ask you guys about upgrading to forged parts before I start reassembling.

Hey JoeNova, I would like to boost it at a later time, you recommend a ring set or cam?

Dustmaker65 give us a little more rundown on the vehicle and its intended use and your future goals.

We usually re-gap the stock rings, or if the mileage is over 150k, run it as-is.

Cam will depend on the entire setup as a whole. Turbo size, turbine A/R, twins, single, displacement, heads, etc.

I am building a ground up '68 C10. All new suspension(Static at this time). For engine, I have this 6.0(L96), Tranny is a 6L80e, with a 12 bolt posi(373 gears). Would like to be able to drive anywhere, and be able to play with the Camaro/Mustang kids in town

I would like to re-ring it since I have it tore down for hot tank/bearings. I was told motor had 66k on it??? No ring ridge at top of cylinders.

I have no clue on turbo size and such. I think I want a single turbo? Its a 6.0, so 364ci. Heads are bare 823's at this time. Will need valves, springs... Intake is the stock truck.

You shouldn't have any problem with reusing your stock components and keeping it alive with a proper tune in the 500-600HP area. In reality I expect you'll make that power relatively easy. Something like a BW S475 turbo would be a nice way to go and give you room to grow power wise without breaking the bank.

Just to make sure....you guys don't think I should re-ring it while it is apart?

I think opening up the the ring gaps is a good idea if boost is in the picture.

As long as the Pistons go back into the same cylinders they came from, just opening the gaps up to .026" primary and .030" secondary plus the suggested Borg Warner S475 turbo is a great combo that can make 500 rear wheel on 93 octane with virtually any cam than can open and close all the valves
