Default Gen 4 5.3 Flat tops

Hi

I just picked up a gen 4 5.3 that was in a burned vehicle. Supposed to have 67k miles on it.

It has flat tops and DOD and VVT

I already have everything to delete the DOD/VVT

What can you tell me about these pistons? They are the flat top with two valve reliefs (exhaust side so they can be used either side of the motor).

In your experience do these usually come out of the deck like the LS motors? Or do the sit below the deck like the dished 5.3's?

Thank you

They should still be out of the hole just like normal LS pistons. Was this from a late model Silverado with 243 heads?

Yes it was. Im guessing 2010 or so? He said it was an 07 but i didnt know 07 had VVT.

Heres the main reason im asking.

I now have two blocks.

1 5.3 gen 3 that i blue printed and cut the deck .016 to bring the quench where i wanted it (.040) with Speed Pro replacement stock 4.8 pistons (gen 3 press on) It was on the dyno yesterday and spun a couple rod bearings, not sure why yet havent completely torn it down. Block was decked because the pistons were about .006 in the hole. I wanted them .010" out

1 5.3 Gen 4 that is stock. With Factory flat tops with valve reliefs.

So at this point, i can either put the Gen 4 rotating assembly into the decked gen 3 block and still have a tight quench, but i am worried it will be to tight.

OR i can just build the gen 4 block and maybe have it decked if needed

Im at work today and was hoping someone would know if these gen 4 flat top 5.3's would have pistons out of the hole or not and if so how much

I think you're thinking of DoD/AFM. VVT never existed on these.

My 07 Silverado has AFM (but I tuned it out).

They put VVT on the later ones. Maybe '11? Not sure. The 4.8s also got it.

The pistons usually come out of the hole about .006". Personally, I'd use the Gen IV block.

I seen your other post that you used Speed Pro pistons in the other engine. Speed Pro pistons with the CH they are will usually sit .006 in the hole, which is why you decked the block so far. If you try using that block you had with the new rotating assembly, the pistons are gonna be way outta the hole hole.

Not trying to be rude.

Why don't you measure while you have the heads off to change the AFM lifters+trays?

I have a 2007 5.3 with flat tops, no valve reliefs. They are .010 out. I'm using a GM 5.3 HO gaskets thats .045 uncompressed.

Understood, and thats exactly what i did

I was at work when i made the thread so i figured i would ask incase anyone knew off the top of their head

Ended up re-using the Gen 3 block and buying Scat rods and using my speed pro pistons.

Reason being that nobody makes a floating piston in std bore with a compression height that will work for me with a .927" pin for use with the gen 4 rods.

So im using my new pistons, the gen 4 crank, a set of scat rods that are 6.1" and having it all balanced
