Well that settles it.

I wouldn't say that it closes the case, but it certainly doesn't have me saving up to replace my milled 821s.

Should we merge threads now? Or do we need a new one - stock ls3 castings are bad and so are aftermarket.

Let's not start that again, that ground is well plowed. This thread was just to point out that AFR has joined the rectangle port movement. I'm sure more than a few knew these were coming but many, myself included did not and found it just trolling the interweb. It's a damn nice head as AFR is know for that and it's going to give TFS 255's a run for the money at that size and price point.

IMO, an aftermarket LS3 head kinda defeats the purpose. I like LS3 heads as a cheap bang for the buck head that has the cross section to support a lot of power. However, if you have the money to go to the aftermarket castings, I would do a small bore LS7 every time.

^Yep.

Btw, who designed these? Is Tony doing some sub work to AFR or did some apprentice of his take over?

Maybe 19 times out of 20? I was initially disappointed when
the TFS LS7 heads came out after purchasing my MAMOFIED
LS3s but in hind sight my mid length runner FAST Intake
was better for me and my RPM range/combo then either the
FAST or MSD would have been with LS7 Heads.

Mast medium bore ls7's are a little larger runner compared to their medium bore ls3's but actually flow a little less

Good thing I don't shop heads based on flow numbers. It is interesting the LS7 heads were tested all the way to .900".

Speaking of runner size... I spent 30 minutes on the phone Tuesday with a guy that spec LS cams for a living. He told me when you get over 260cc you basically need a single plane intake and a solid roller to take full advantage of the cylinder heads. I cant tell all the info he let me in on but he took me to school real quick.

Bigger ports also hurts the throttle response.
Must I remind y'all that he is no cylinder heads salesman and he can careless about what heads you running. The guy just spec cams for a living so he knows what works and what dont work to well.

Basically for anything more than a stock LS3 head(260cc port) you're in racing-only cam and intakes? At least according to the guy who specs cams....

Well, you mentioned runner volume. The LS3 and LS7 ports, while both "rectangle ports", are different enough that volume may not really be accurate way to determine runner size in a meaningful way. However, the medium bore LS7 head uses a larger valve than the medium bore LS3, which I do think is a good indicator of size since the MCSA is normally based off of the valve diameter.

It would have been good to see how the medium bore LS3 port stacked up against the LS7 port at that high lift.

If you don't have enough cubic inches under the heads and you have to spin it up to a higher RPM than what the long runner intakes are meant for, then yeah, absolutely.

Yes. Thats correct. He put it to me pretty staright forward. Why have a large runner and you go only spin the motor to 7000 rpm. A dual plane intake hurts a rectangle head and a hydraulic roller does also which together hurts overall performance. Not to mention the big valves are very sensitive to overlap. Remember combo is king.

LS3/LS7 heads are great for the money but to Really the MOST out the heads you need to rev the motor like crazy which is rough on the valvetrain etc...

Its no big secret.. look and pay attention. Youll see alot of Ls3 headed strokers running 11s in F bodies. Why have a 11 sec 408ci? its a waste of money.

Then look at the guys running 10s naturally aspirated with strokers with a good pair of aftermarket cathedrals youll simply see which one hauls ***!!

I been studying LS stroker motors for years. Here on tech, Richard Holdnerer builds, GM high tech builds, engine masters, engine labs etc.....

While flow at .900 would be interesting it's also a moot point for 99.9% of people
