The wife and I removed the pistons, rods and the crankshaft today trying to get it ready for the machine shop. Everything looks great except we notice a little bit of a chip in a brown block section located at the bottom of #6 cylinder. Is this something we should be worried about or is this something that the machine shop will be able to take care of with some honing. Thanks for all the help and Happy Holidays.
The chip is at the 4 O'Clock position
The chip is at the bottom just slightly to the left
Chip is at the 5 O'Clock position. There was a little white hair that got in the cylinder wall just above it.. Its not a scratch in the wall
Ok thanks. So every cylinder wall has these and they are perfect shaped rectangle at the bottom of the cylinder. Is that normal? I will try the brake cleaner method that you mentioned
There are two perfectly shaped rectangles in every cylinder opposite from one another. I have never seen this before. The guy I bought the engine from said it came from a 2005 Tahoe with 58K miles. While I was in the process of tearing it down, I noticed that the engine is a Gen IV internally and a Gen III externally. Thanks again for all the help.

That's where the pin is the ring lands don't come down that far and there is no skirt material. As the Oil heats up it bakes on it coats those area's that are not touched. It's usually caused by Lack of oil changes and poor quality oils. Especially if that was 58K mileage motor.
"Oil monitors" are not accurate in these newer vehicles. People should follow regular maintenance schedule's
As to the gen 4 internal in a gen 3 block. 2005 was the first year they did that so it perfectly normal as to what your seeing.
Thanks everyone for all the help. The engine will be going to the engine shop for a hot wash and honing by the end of the week. Lets see what they can do.
