Default How much power does milling heads on 5.3 add?

I have a 08 lmg 5.3, it has 799 heads stock with flattop pistons. I'm doing a dod delete and ls2 cam, I was wondering while I had the heads off what kind of power would milling the heads to bump the compression up to 10.5 and how much to run stock gaskets. It's going in a rock crawler so I don't want to change cams I need low end torque and hp.

Depends......what's your compression ratio now?

Has the engine been tuned or still running stock ECU? I'd plan on a tune... And you'll have to shop to find someone who does well with low RPM torque instead of red-line power,, Its hard to find a guy who can shift his process to a crawler engine vs a drag or race oriented point of view.. And knows how to get the power on just off idle..

I'm still working on it. Just was asking while I had it apart on the engine stand if it was worth it to deck the heads. I'm gonna get a tune .

What kind of power should I be looking at with this setup?

I would go aftermarket cam LONG before I would go LS2.

I was looking at a 212/218 . But for the price I went a little smaller for the ls2. Again I'm not looking for all out hp. I gotta spin 400lbs of 42 in tires on demand. And a huge stall is a problem offroad.

LS2 cam doesn't even pick up anything over a stock 5.3 cam until 4500+ RPM.
You could get a cam with a nice low LSA that would be a monster for torque.

you might want to rethink getting the heads cut. the gain would be exactly what you are looking for. bottom end torque.

Agreed. Compression increase is the best way to gain power everywhere, instantly.

How much power would milling the heads give me?
if it's only 10 or so I don't think it would be worth it.

torque increase, better throttle response.

That all depends where in the curve the 10hp is. A bump in compression will certainly be noticeable down low. That, paired with a mild cam like the BTR stage 1 truck cam could make a nice difference from down low throughout most of the usable RPM range.

Wouldn't a compression bump tend to fatten the curve from idle all the way up?
