Default oil pump swap in car question

so im just gonna swap the stock pump to a melling high volume high output pump. its worth it and better in the long run. as far as dropping the pan, do you really have too? i think with the retro fit pan i have just enough room to get a wrench in to hit the pickup bolt.. any done it without dropping the pan?

It can be done. I rather drop pan and do it instead of pinching the o-ring. Alot of guys run the stock replacemnet melling 95 pump

As stated, it can be done. Don't drop the bolt...just be sure to have a magnetic pick up tool handy. Also as stated, be very careful when reinserting the pick up tube as to not pinch the o-ring.

It depends on what pick-up your using?.....If your using a Holley pan with Allen headed bolt/s.......Good luck getting a allen wrench in there.

I would drop the pan & not risk pinching/tearing the O-ring.

Unless your trying to mask a problem.....You do not need a HV/HP oil pump.

General consensus is that the high volume pump is not needed or desired for a non-DOD engine. It actually pumps TOO MUCH oil. High pressure is OK, but not high volume.

A trick ive learned is take some towels and cram them into the oil pan under the pump in case you drop the bolt. the hardest part of the job is probably re-installing the bolt. one trick ive learned by doing these is take a small zip tie and zip it around the neck under the shoulder of the bolt. you can then guide with one hand and install with the other. use a ratchet action on the bolt using the zip tie. just enough friction to hold the bolt to tighten and loose enough to ratchet. when you get the bolt threaded into the pump a good ways, just use a flat blade to pierce the zip tie to break it. make sure you don't drop the zip tie in the oil pan (why I cram rags too, just for safety). using this method, I have never dropped an oil pan.

i was gonna swap pump because im getting 13psi oil pressure @ hot idle. i talked to improved racing and they said thast's fine because on cold start im getting 30 psi and as the oil heats up of course its natural to drop. i do have normal oil pressure off idle. i got the melling 10296 pump, may send it back.

More engine information? 13 PSI hot idle is NOT normal on a healthy LS engine, Did you double check with a mechanical pressure gauge?

My L92 with new bearings runs 30-35 PSI hot idle (verified) with a stock unmodified LS6 oil pump with Mobil 1 Euro 0w40 in the sump.

Mobil 1 0w40 Viscosity/cst at 212 degrees.....12.9
Mobil 1 5w30 Viscosity/cst at 212 degrees.....11.0
As you can see, Viscosity isn't far off from the GM recommended 5w30 at temp.

No mechanical but I have 2 senders one for the ecu and one for my dash gauge. One sender in factory location and one sender on oil cooler adapter at pan. Both read within +\- 1 of each other using my scan tool and Hp tuners.

If your 5w30 at 212 is 11.. I’m 10w30 and 13... at idle only. Great pressure on throttle

I'm running the 0w40 @ 12.9.....So our Viscosity is about identical, I have a "thin" 40 weight & you have a "thick" 30 weight. I'm guessing this is a "boutique" 10w30 because it's technically out of grade at 212f/should be labeled a 40 weight......

Engine info? Pressure double checked?

Amsoil 10w30 dominator oil. Was on amsoil 5w30 before . LS3 GM crate motor with cam swap. Pressure double checked electronicly via 2 different senders.

What oil pan/pick-up tube are you running? Most aftermarket & some OE pick-up tubes don't fit perfectly without some tweaking to make them perfect.....You may have rolled or otherwise damaged the pick-up O-ring.

Was the camshaft journal diameter checked against the original?

I look at it like this.....You have a fairly new engine & running a higher viscosity oil that probably has a high HTHS rating. 13 psi at any point is unacceptable! It's not going to get better as the miles pile on. I would like to see DOUBLE that at 750 RPM.
If this was a 200,000 mile engine.....I would be more accepting of the pressures but still call them on the low side of acceptable.

What would it be with the GM recommended Dexos 1 (2nd gen) 5w30 with a Viscosity @ 212 of 10.4?

Default Update

so I swapped over to a melling high volume high pressure pump and I’m well over 20psi hot oil at idle. Swap wasn’t a hassle and I did end up having to drop the pan. I have the Holley front clearance pan and it did have have 2 Allen heads in the pick up tube. One allen you can get to super easy with a ball end Allen through the oan bolt hole. The other one closer to the crank is a pain but I just took a Allen key and chopped it super short to fit right in there. All in all super happy with results and it really wasn’t that hard to do it.
