Default LS2 Block Broken, Thoughts on repair

This is a low mile corvette pull out 34,000 miles. It was going in a second gen Camaro until this happened. I was bolting the T56 up and it began to bind. I decided to move the jack supporting the trans so i could get a better look and when I released pressure it popped. Ive already purchased a new block and switched everything out and thought about selling this one as is, I just wanted to know if its worth fixing or if it can be fixed. The obvious concern being that it broke into the oil galley. I figured someone here has knowledge and experience welding cast Aluminum and could shed some light. Id hate to scrap it but if its done then so be it. Thanks

Cast aluminum can be welded but it is a giant PITA to get all the oil out that has been absorbed into it. If you can find a shop that can bake it as part of their cleaning process then soak it in Acetone you might get it clean enough to weld. You will need a shop that has a water cooled heliarc machine to do the work, I would not trust a wire machine for this repair. It will help the shop if you can research what aluminum alloy the block is, so they can use the correct filler rod. Make sure the weld is 100% penetration. Good Luck...

I’ve got one in the shop, pretty much broke in the same spot. The UPS guy played basketball with mine, however.
Im not sure that even if it could be “repaired” that I’d trust it very far. I just use mine for mock-up. Too many good blocks out there for sale, to take the risk, for me personally.

It's good for mock-up, but that's all.

Ah no big deal. Weld the oil galley shut, find a JY trans and weld the block to it. Boost the **** out of it!

That would be so WIN if you did that lol

That's fucked !

Although if you had suitable welding gear etc to try and repair have a go just as a project. Oil plug would be the difficult bit....or just weld the whole thing up !

If you could get the oil galley closed off it would be okay, there's several people running around with several missing transmission bolts lol

I can fix that no problem. The issue is the cost for me to do so if you were a paying customer. I've welded on several ls blocks with zero issues. With current inverter welding machine technology cleaning the aluminum isn't as much of a issue as older transformer machines. This is a situation where if you have the means and knowledge plus time to fix its easy but to pay someone else it's a crap shoot. What would you take for the block? Btw for me to fix that I'd likely have 3-4 hours in it at $100 a hour.

And a new block is circa $1000 or so ?

Therein lies the dilemma.

Maybe a candidate for JB weld !! lol

Why buy a new one, when there are so many good used ones out there for much less coin?
