Camshaft help please
I have been reading on this forum for a long time but I think this is the first time I’ve ever posted. I need some help with making a choice on a camshaft for my setup.
I have emailed BTR and Texas Speed for help. Texas Speed replies but told me to run their cams, I would need to get different springs. That wouldn’t be a big deal if I hadn’t just bought a pair of LS3 ported heads and spent extra for BTR .660 lift springs. Texas Speed says I would experience valve float using btr springs with TS camshafts.
I havent heard anything back from BTR. I am leaning towards using the BTR 400ci+ stroker NA cam, but I’m a little concerned TS mentioned that the valve springs I have are a potential problem.
Specs listed below.
Two questions.
Has anyone here used the BTR stroker cam on an Ls3 headed 408? Results?
Is there some problem with the BTR springs I am unaware of and is there legitimate concerns woth these?
Specs:
-408
-Eagle forged 4” crankshaft
-Eagle H beam rods
-Mahle forged flat tops -3cc valve reliefs
-4.030 bore
-.040 head gasket
-.002 pistons to deck clearance.
-11.4:1 compression
-Brian Tooley Ls3 ported heads with btr springs
-Hi-ram sheetmetal intake- 6” intake runners
-92mm TB
-1-7/8” long tube headers
-Full exhaust- 3” h pipe to mufflers- 4” out of mufflers
-4l80 transmission
-3800 stall converter

What are the specs on the BTR cam? If the lift is less than .660 you should be fine. .660 springs are much stiffer than stock, and should handle any cam up to about .650 lift.

You will not float with a TSP cam and BTR springs as long as you use good pushrods. I would slightly clearance your pushrod bosses and run 3/8" pushrods. Will not float.

Be patient. Wait to hear back from Tooley, since they did the heads. Nobody can spec you a cam better than the one doing the head work. LSFest is going on right now, so most venders are in Bowling Green and not returning calls. I’m waiting for a callback right now from Mast and WS6Store. I think both are at the show.
