Default Valve spring questions.

I purchased a set of 799 heads awhile back for my LS1 with dual springs already installed. I believe the guy said they are either PAC springs or Tooley springs good for .650 lift.
I am now taking those springs off and putting them on my 823 heads for the LS3 I'm building, and wondering if I should check installed height or just run them? They have the seats with titanium retainers, from what
I read his springs are plug and play with a stock LS1 head?

Want to make sure before I install them. The cam I'm running has around .621 of lift on the intake side, and .605 on exhaust.

I always check installed height. I’ll usually shim the springs for .060” coilbind clearance so checking the installed height tells me how much shim I need.

Which tool would you guys recommend to check install height? Also, what kind of shims should I use if I need them?

Without knowing what springs they are or even mileage.....I'd get new springs.

Jus' sayin'...…

I have the PAC LS spring height mic. It’s meant for the smaller OD springs that are on the LS and will even work with the beehive springs if you so choose. I got it off summit, and you should be able to buy shims too, but they're in packs of 50 so it might be cheaper to measure, then call you're local shop and see if they’ll sell you just the shim you need.

I finally got ahold of the guy that sold me the heads 2 years ago. They're tooleys. 660 platinum springs with titanium retainers. They were ran on a turbo car. They look good but what the hell do I know. I might just buy some new ones. On his site he says they're drop in and go on the LS heads (stock)

Get new springs, you hate to find out otherwise that you should have.

There is no way to determine if a spring is "good" just by looking at it, unless you are looking at the needle of the Rimac spring tester and they still maintain the proper load for the specified height.

Exactly! The springs need to have their spring pressures checked against the original spring rates.

All springs will end up dropping spring pressure in time, but you want to test them by compressing them according to a previously measured compression height on a spring pressure tester in a vise.

Compare the numbers to see what you have... let us know what you find and you will get a recommendation.
