Default Question about an LSA oil pan

Forgive my ignorance is im still getting familiar with the newer ls stuff. My brother is building a 70 Camaro pro touring car and putting a lsa from a zl1 in it. He's fitting it into his Detroit speed front end and the stock pan doesn't clear. He's got an f body pan but has a quick question, in the picture he's pointing to something the lsa pan has that there f body doesn't. Searching around I'm assuming it's a bypass valve for the oil filter but want to verify. Thanks for the help!

Detroit Speed subframe requires special headers and oil pan. Contact DS. They will give you your options. Extreme top shelf subframes!

Yea he's got the headers from DS, I'll mention the pan too. He's got damn near the whole catalog going into this car haha.

Yes, that's the bypass valve. It's typically present in oil pans on engines that have DOD/AFM and VVT. This is because these systems operate on oil pressure, so those engines have higher flow oil pumps. The bypass valve returns excess oil flow back into the oil pan when those systems are not active. If you eliminate those systems and swap in a lower flow rate oil pump, you can safely eliminate this valve by capping it off.

So if the engine is going to have the high flow pump and DOD/AFM and VVT operational, you probably want to use a pan that has a bypass valve. Otherwise you can use any pan you want.

Thanks for super detailed explanation!! I told him to jump on here and start up a build thread, I know he's on Nasty z28 and I believe a pro touring one as well.

And LilJayV10 you go that right. The DS stuff is pure sexyness. He made up some wooden wheels to roll the sub-frame under the car and square it up to keep going with mock up and it's all just a work of art.

I was on the same boat 3 years ago when I swapped in a LSA into my '71 Pontiac Firebird, Don't worry about any of that and just slap in a oil pan from a 98-02 4th gen Camaro/Firebird, it will drop in just fine and will work like charm, you need to get the oil pan, windage tray, oil pick up tube, and the dip stick as a set. This is what I use on my '71 and it works flawless. If you plan to road race/auto X you may consider adding oil trap doors baffle from Improved Racing, I added it and found it way better than the stock baffle, never had a low oil even on over 1 G turns.

Another oil pan option is the AutoKraft which is mild steel and has baffled/trap doors... if the car is lowered and he doesn't want to worry about a cast aluminum pan cracking from road hazards....

I'll second the Autocraft pan, that's a serious piece of equipment. Still don't believe how heavy it is, but it works fantastic.
