Are Gen 4 5.3 blocks the same as LS2 minus bore?
Are Gen 4 5.3 blocks the same as LS2 minus bore? Are the aluminum Gen 4 5.3L blocks (LH6, LH8, LH9, LC9) the same as an LS2 block, just with a smaller bore? Basically, can the Gen 4 5.3L blocks be bored to 4" and become an LS2? I know some have DoD and AFM, but those features are not part of the block, right?
Sorry if that is a stupid question, just curious since I am thinking of having my LS1 machined for a stroker.

No, the 5.3 block is different. Solid main bearing bulkheads, no breather holes. Max. over bore on the 5.3 3.897" same as the 5.7.

Gen IV block weight GM raised the floor of the water jacket on the Gen IV blocks. There is more aluminum in the block which is why they weight more.
Unfortunately they went with shorter head bolts as well which don't tie the block together as well as on the Gen III. Ford did the same thing on the Coyote blocks but has since gone back to the long bolts.

I'm building a supercharged Gen IV. It started as a 5.3 VVT/DOD. When touring a nationally known speed center it was discussed. He then showed me two pallets of new GM 5.3 blocks they just received; they are the building blocks (no pun intended) of most of their HP engines.
