JKD and Bortus,
I’m with you guys, I’d gladly give up max power for under the curve torque and power. I see a lot of people donkey dick cam and Holley hi ram trucks that they daily. I could see if the went FAST hi ram. I think that would be a lot better vs Holley HR. I honestly don’t see how Holley sells a lot of those.

I’m with you here. I’ve gotten into a couple of debates over on CF about the Holley Hi-Ram.

I have a fast 102 that is matched from my 210's and a 102TB to match. I'm sure those who are running the hi rise intakes feel the power they are making. Just ask them. But to each his own. I know for me and the street driving I do, under the curve or useful power is what I crave.

I just bolted my AFR 205’s (much the same as your 210’s) on the 6.2 I have installed in my C5 Corvette.
Total budget deal, but it has forged rods/pistons.
Was an LS1, trying to keep it cheap, so cam, heads, Fast 102 intake port matched etc all from the LS1.

Nice to see folks on board about making power where it counts!

I think its gonna rip nicely. I bet it picks up 2 tenths and a couple mph. It was far from a slouch with the LS1. But mam, at 100k miles, it was tired!

Also agree about the Hi Ram Holley. It does look cool though.

I’m a tuner and always get called after folks finish their builds, and guess what? There’s a Holley intake on a mild combo. Funny. Should have used a cathedral TBSS intake.

Looking forward to your progress. Gonna be cool in the 51 Dodge.

Ron

Yeah part of me wants to bolt the 210's and go, but the compression is a little high with the 65cc chambers.

I would do something like 224/224-112+4. Would be torquey, support decent enough power to about 6000 rpm, and have a subtle note at idle, but not rowdy. I would run it in the panel truck until I had a chance to feel it out if I was willing to trade some bottom end for some top end.

Not a bad cam at all. I was aiming for a 40 IVC to help get that Tahoe moving. But that cam you listed would certainly drive decent and not sacrifice much torque in that 416. It would breathe better up top also. Would be a milder sounding idle if that matters.

I was thinking a little earlier closing myself. Honesty I was looking at something along the line of 38-40 based on the thread I posted a few months ago. We where spitballing a 416 and a 454 in a heavy 4x4. My knowledge gets cloudy when it comes to knowing what constitutes early ivc vs displacement and stroke. I look at the 383 I have now and I'm a little gun shy on compression. These heavy trucks tend to change the game a little. Lucky the panel truck is under 4K so that will open up a few more options.

This might help -- IVC of 43 and a stock type I take will generally peak tq right around 4800, and then power in the 5800-6300 range depending on displacement. 38 is kind of necessary for a 5.3 to make decent torque. Bigger motor you can push it a bit. Really in a 416, anything from 40-45 is going to make good torque. If the vehicle is lighter, push it to 45. Heavier, pull it back to 40.

If you were going for top end, I would suggest 48-50 and more compression

I asked this on a different post and got crickets. What is anyone's feelings on the VVT cam with a setup like this? Seems it would allow a cam that has say an idle-4500 power band to broaden that upwards of 5500-6k with the phaser. These smallish cams we are using play into the use of this feature doesn't it?

It is a good application for vvt but you would likely want a phase limiter. Vvt works in large part because there is a ton of room at tdc. Cam is 20+ degrees bigger, so you would want to limit vvt to a band if about 8-10 degrees.

I would definitely use a limiter. Wouldn't want any chance meetings amongst internals. I believe more so than with a standard 3bolt, the quality of your tuner would be the key to happiness.

We learned how to tune the Hemi VVT cars. Was quite surprising the gains that could be made. Sadly, it was a Mopar shop, never got to play with the GM stuff.

Cam in my Vette is 226/230 114+1
Nice crackle at idle. Didn’t give away any secrets. 😊

I like the idea of a VVT cam. Most people shy away from that idea. I believe most tuners don’t have the experience (or desire) to tune them.

Patrick G. Is the guy to go to for a custom VVT Cam. Actually, I think CAM MOTION can do it too. You just need to have someone experienced to tune it. If you don’t want to do the tuning game, just give TSP a call. They have a lot of exper. with VVT stuff and they GIVE you the VVT tables.

I’m interested on where this build goes. Best of luck

Jim
