Default Cam Guru's Step inside: Help Needed

I see there is a HUGE amount of experience around here and i figured hell why not ask. I'm running an Edelbrock Eforce supercharger in my 2010 6.2 GMC 1/2 truck. I started out with just throwing a LS9 cam in it early on when it was first NA. I wasn't planning the blower upgrade but you all know how that goes. The thing hits 3000 rpm and it is like you just sprayed a 100 shot of nitrous. Not what a really want if you know what i mean. It has 22's on it and it put down a respectable 440/440 on a good ole Dynojet thru the upgraded 6 speed auto and 3:42 gears. Well the motor has the dreaded piston slap when cold so i plan on tearing it down this winter and throwing some oem LSA pistons and rings in it if the cylinders look ok. If not i will order some new aftermarket. The thing is all i do is tow with this thing. If it's not my 3600 lb 22 ft ski boat it's a 30 foot race trailer with my TA, all tools and fuel and extra sets of racing wheels. It's time to find a cam for this thing and i am open to all ideas. I've searched and searched on the web and never really cam up with good cam results for what i'm doing with what i have. Any help would be much appreciated. Someone i know recommended i do gears for sure but really not too keen on that idea if i don't have to. Thanks in advance. Oh one more thing to add, it's pullied for 8 lbs of boost and plan on running 9.5:1 compression.

Something like a 220/234 117+3 would make for a nice bump in power without any issues with crappy drivability. I ran a 224/234 116+2 in an LS3 powered Vette with a TVS2300 Maggie on top. It did 660+ rwhp at 9.5psi. You don't need to over cam it. Cam conservatively and let the blower make the power. Also, the blower is the limiting factor on how much power you will make. A stupid big cam won't make you much more power vs a smaller well specced cam.

Pat G would also be a good guy to have on your side. He won't miss.

Something like a 220/234 or 224/238 on a 118+4 would probably do you right.

228/242 118+4 is the biggest I would consider.

I know i will probably end up paying one of the pros to spec me one but first i sure would think somebody out there has done something like my setup. Like to hear some results happy or sad either way.

I was actually pondering that same cam (220/234) but was pondering the LSA.....

I have a 218/230 in my work truck with a TVS2300. That's a 6.0L. I think you can go a little bigger without getting into big cam issues. You are running around out of boost most of the time. A bigger cam just makes it feel lazy out of boost. Pulley size and blower size will determine how much power you make. A bigger cam just makes for lazy street performance and crappy fuel eco.

Thats funny you say that about the mileage because the thing gets 18-20 mpg down the highway at 60 all day long. Its just a mutt down low though. I think the stock cam with the blower would be much better to be honest.

You're leaving power on the table using the stock cam. If you're good with that, then go with it. With full boost coming in at just above idle, a little more cam won't hurt a damn thing though. A cam like I mentioned, along with a 3.5" blower pulley, will run really nice and tow the hell out of anything you care to hook on to. That got me in the low to mid 12's in a 5K# truck. Towed like a ***** too.

No i guess you misunderstood. There will definitely be a bigger cam going in i just meant the stocker would probably be better then the LS9 cam in it now. I'm just really surprised the LS9 cam is such a slouch. Is it because of it's large split?

No, it's just a shitty cam designed to tame the LS9 into something you can sell the public. That's it.

Lots of blown trucks here. FORCED INDUCTION - PerformanceTrucks.net Forums I used to be active there...until I gave up trying to make a 5000# truck haul ***. Much easier in a 3200# Vette.

Cool thanks for the info. I will be sure to check it out. I already decided i will order a 6.6 OEM crank and throw a set of new pistons and rings in it. A better cam and more stroke should make this thing a stump puller for sure!

Well that escalated quickly.

Even with the 4" crank, I would keep the cam conservative...

Yup i agree totally. Probably stick with 9.5 to 1 compression. Seems to be the sweet spot also. Cranks only a 3.860 so not going over board there i don't think?

With a 3.860 throw, using a 6.2+" rod, you can maintain a 1.6+ rod ratio... some people say it doesn't matter, but I always consider a rod ration above 1.6 a good thing. You can even use Gen IV 4.8 (6.275") rods and ~1.025" CH pistons...

A simple 231/239 118+4, or thereabouts, cam will be a towing monster, even with a conservative 9.5-75:1 static compression ratio.

I didn't see what you wanted in the way of "stock" it drove, but I would be erring on the small side given its already got a PD blower on it. Let the blower do the work and pick a good truck cam that has off idle power, drives like stock, and has the mpg's, and is easy on the valvetrain. Something like this:

Interesting. Thanks for the ideas to kick around. Actually a little shake rattle and roll does not bother me one bit
