Default 434 pistons recommendation

My 6.0 block is at RED and will soon get Darton sleeves.
I asked Steve to install Katech main billet caps and ARP main and head studs at the same time.
I also asked to final hone cylinders, that can be done, but I need to provide him pistons.

I already briefly asked about pistons in Eric’s 434 build thread, but don’t want to clutter his thread more than that.

I plan MMS265/MSD intake “mild” street engine that will run 100% of time on 91 octane gas.

I’m looking for pistons recommendation. I guess in -8cc to target roughly 11.5:1 compression.
Would strongly prefer Wiseco, but they are not making them anymore in -8cc for 4.155 bore.

Tusky suggested Diamond that I have no experience with.
What line of Diamond pistons I should search for?

Che70velle mentioned Mahle. If I remember, DarthV8r has Mahle in his 440.
What line of Mahle pistons is recommended?

Any other choices?

Mine are JE. Wiseco and JE are now owned by the same parent company. Custom pistons is about 6 weeks almost no matter who you call. So get what you want.

Marcin, don’t waste your energy trying to source the pistons. Let Tony put it all together as a package. He will spec the correct ring package and make sure all the details get worked out for you. He’s your guy. It’s what he does.

Jake,
Since I am definitely not in a hurry, this is exactly what Steve @ RED suggested. He told me to call Wiseco to order custom pistons.

Scott,
You are definitely right! I will reach out to Tony.

Following Scott’s wise advice, I called Tony.
I’m getting the whole rotating assembly from Mamo Motorsports.

The diamond pistons are lighter than Wiseco and JE pistons. All 3 of those brands are good but again the Diamond are the lightest ones. Alot of the big names are running Diamond pistons. The Diamond pistons are 42 grams lighter than the Wiseco pistons given on the same size piston.

Example on a LS1... The Wiseco pistons weigh 447 grams. The stock piston weighs 435 grams.
The Diamond pistons are 405 grams.

Another with JE fsr pistons (in my LS2). Weight is 429 grams. Good pistons i'm impressed with them. It looks like a lot of JE pistons are also currently in stock. Check eBay also.

This may be true for the catalog pistons, but when ordering semi-custom/custom pistons, Wiseco or any piston manufacturer for that matter, will build the piston to virtually any weight you want, within reason of course, with virtually any ring package you want, along with custom pin lengths and pin wall thickness. A light weight piston is a great foundation for race performance, but in dealing with a street build, you want the piston to have some durability to it, which means a little weight added to it here and there. This is why I like to buy the assembly from a trusted builder as a whole, that way it can be set up with correct rod design, piston weight, ring package...critical...and bob-weight of crank. Usually you can save a little money buying it all as an assembly also. Currently the hard part is actually getting the parts, as the globe is dealing with massive back-orders in every industry on materials.

I’m building a 434 currently, using a K1 crank, Scat I beams and Icon 2618 coated skirt pistons (402grams) 88 gram .927 pins, the Bob weight is 1671grams, I would say this light for this size engine.

Beware of K1 cranks for this reason only; I bought one on Black Friday 2 years ago thinking I scored a super deal for $565, it turns out it had no target Bob weight, it was not drilled in the counterweights at all, as it turned out it was very, very expensive get balanced. Had to buy expensive drill on top of it because they are hardened and that stuff is difficult to get into with a drill. Point? Make sure when you buy a new crank it has a target weight even if you don’t know what your Bob weigh will be, at least the process is started.

good post! I'd add to that, if you're not sure, aim high on the bob weights. it's far easier and cheaper to remove some weight than it is to add mallory.

I went one step further, based on Tony Mamo advise and ordered complete balanced rotating assembly.

Tony selected Wiseco semi-custom pistons, Total Seal rings and Manley crank/rods for my application.
