Cam Gurus
I would like to have a little feedback on what cam for a 450 cid.first let me say I’m running a Mike Jones Cam and it a great cam.(scar the cam probably let him regrind it if he can)anyway I’m having lifter issues with my RHS block and destroy 1 of my lifter and scar one of the bores (my heads are 260 TFS they are 70cc right now .I’m having them milled to 65cc should put me @ 12.2.1 compression .they are going to Eric Weingartner for port work and valve job this week.(I’m thinking it’s going to take 5 or 6 weeks to get a cam anyway ) looking for max effort NA cam that will work with a 200 shot of nitrous and plastic intake with standard runners . all info appreciate .what kill me is I just got my car setup the way I like with 17” rims.(widen by weldcraft) I call it my go cart look 8.50 wide 245/40/17on front and 10.50 285/40/17 wide on the back .I got to take the wife to dinner on the new setup before it tore up

how can one lifter cause so much trouble? good thing I’m retired and can do the work myself. I’m still looking for feedback on a cam and to see what everyone else is doing NA
thanks for your input

That cam is done for. I had a motor let go within 5 miles due to stuck injector. Had a brand new BTR cam in it. Had one small chip in it and I drove it down the road to actually show it to Brian and get his thoughts. Can't be reground nor spray welded and reground. He said it would cost more to have that done than it would be to buy a new cam.

Good to know. Parts fail, even the best. You mentioned this was from lifter bore clearance issues anyway. Are you willing to share current cam specs, to give us an idea of where you are currently?

That's a real interesting cam spec. Made good power for the combo. Jones knows his stuff. Since you already have great topend valvetrain, I would just go solid and add a lot more lift. I think you can make the same power with less duration. Port the intake too, there is def power there. Real nice combo, good luck w/ it!

I agree with Dave. With the right port job on both the intake and heads, along with more exhaust duration and overall lift, you should see 80 more hp. I’m a 434 with a 254/268 solid, MMS TFS heads and MMS MSD and made 616 with an absolute junk tune. I’m likely 640 now, but haven’t had time to make it back to the rollers…I don’t really care what it reads actually.
Check out Darths thread here. He just missed 700 with the same topend we both have, MMS ported of course, with a little bigger Ti intake valve, and less camshaft than you, but more lift. He will top 700 next time he visits the dyno. Lift is power across the board. You have a better shaft setup for even more lift than both me and Darth. I’m over .720, and Darth is more than that.

Still interested in cam spec for a N/A build with a 150 shot of nitrous.had to turn my heads around the wait period was 6 months for Weingartner. I’m sending them to Greg Good to be ported.

I would move to a newer solid roller design from Cammotion at their LLSR or Comp's new tight lash low shock lobes. Both companies will have a cam guru to spec something for you based on things they've seen work.
I feel like 260* intake duration should be enough to get the thing to peak up around 6500 as it sits. You want about a 1500 rpm extension from peak torque to peak rpm for a well optimized combo. You're at 1100rpm right now which is showing that something is losing efficiency at higher rpm you might have something else to consider beyond just cam spec.
Things that I see on your existing cam - I think you should shoot for more overlap for the size of the engine, a bit earlier IVC and more exhaust duration. I would also suggest getting the lift up to ~.715" on both sides.
Something like a 256/272 on 113+4 in a tight lash solid would run really well in a 450 and you should still be able to drive it without trouble on the street. I don't know enough about nitrous to make a recommendation specific for that, but nitrous specific cams hurt NA performance and driveability will suffer for a little bit of gain on spray.
I'd hope that a fresh cam would peak at 6500 and make more power everywhere. Not sure if that's what you'd call max effort or not, but the next step from here really is an intake that isn't going to fit under your hood lol and a cam that complements it.
There are people that modify the MSD intakes to shorten the runners and port them and I think you should consider that.

Thanks u spanks13 for your input. I seen that comp cam had a cam low shock lobes about the same spec your talk about .I’m going to be down around 2 months so I will have time to think about it.and as far as nitrous goes they don’t call it dope for nothing .I have to say 150 shot is fun WHEN it setup right with all safety features. My engine is@the machine shop right now due to a bad lifter so i will have time to think about a new cam.when does it ever end ?and yes the intake is the problem for a street car for now I just run the MSD. maybe 2 months from now I will be running CID intake and a parachute who knows
