Default First steps, LSX 427, how does this look?

Hi all! I'm parting together an engine build for restoring my old man's 64 stingray. The stingray has a 427 hood on it and has a 350 in there currently. It's been sitting for a few decades and I'm thinking of dropping a 427 lsx in it, because why not.

The goals of this build are: pump gas, weekend cruiser.

My current plan is to order the block and rotating assembly. Once in-hand, take them to a local machine shop to have it bored to 4.125. Assuming that will take a few months between ordering and machining, I'll halt there.

Parts List:
  1. LSX Engine Block: https://sdparts.com/i-24137480-chevr...tie-block.html
  2. Rotating Assembly: https://www.cnc-motorsports.com/lsx-...ies-crank.html

The sticker shock is killer, and I'm open to alternatives but for this car I'd like to do it right the first time (as much as that's possible). Down the line I'd pair this with TF245 heads and a Fast lsxr intake.

Fact check me on this, while absurdly expensive, how does this plan sound?

If it were me, I'd get a used LS7 block, and put dry sleeves in it, and go from there.......

Heard and Heard. Thank you for the heads-up.

We have a swap meet coming up and I'll ask around, but curious if folks have thoughts on sourcing the block? I'll check junkyards, plenty of camaros and vettes around ATL, so they gotta be winding up somewhere. I don't mind dropping the money for a block from SD but also don't mind sourcing a cheaper one and giving the rest of the dough to a local machine shop to sleeve it.

In the meantime, I'll look into ls7 builds and see how other folks are putting these together.

Texas Speed LS7 Options.

It seems like a lot, but add it all up and it gets very close to the same price, so buying an assembled engine can be a big time saver.

Yeah the 22k on one receipt hurts until you start piecing it together.

I've come up to ~14k on pricing the block, intake, heads, cam, rotating assembly alone.

One quirk on this build is that for whatever reason I'd like to build the engine myself, with help from my uncle. Not saying I won't change my mind or wish I had just picked up a turn-key, but my dad was an engine builder and racer and so is my uncle, so while dollars to donuts buying a turn-key is the right answer, putting this together means something special to me since I remember being in the shop as a kid while he tweaked 350's and built his racecars.

To be honest and fair, my head is too far in the clouds and I'd probably be happy putting some of that 22k into one of the 350's lying around the shop and have money to spare for... all the other drivetrain and restoration bits. But time I do have and ideally want to have this car running before the end of next year. And part of me just wants to trade my keyboard for a wrench before I go all office-space at the day-job, so this could give me something to wrench on in the meantime. My family's shop is in the southern part of the state so I don't have easy access at the moment to wrench away when work ends, in my head building a block would give me that satisfaction.

That being said, this car is my dream car and marrying this 427 to the old stingray would be pretty cool, so for now the plan is still an ls swap.

Totally respect that, that's the other side of the coin for sure. My dad ekes out 400bhp on his SBC and loves every minute of doing so.

You can always do a 427 LS3 with a 4.07” bore and 4.10” stroke. It would be alot lighter than the LSX block and still all off the shelf parts. Just find a decent 6.2L block.

Wiseco Pistons PN:
K451X7 (3cc reliefs)

K1 Tech 6.125” Rods PN:

K1 Tech 4.100” Crank PN:
012FAE41058 (for 58x reluctor)

Is there an issue with the slugs coming too far down the sleeves with those 4.00" and 4.10" stroke cranks? Those longer strokes are sure appealing

No, not with todays piston skirt designs. It’s a non-issue today.

has all of the major piston manufacturers switched to improved designs for 4.0 stroke pistons?

Do any move the pins closer to a side for less drag or whatever they (heard some do) do it for?

I’ve always wanted a LS3 stroker but was weary of the stick out.

The heavier LSX blocks more than make up for the weight penalty with it being able to withstand more horsepower and the LSR block although not cheap would be a really good choice if wanting to stay aluminum. Another nice thing about the LSX and LSR blocks is that they're priorty main oiling systems and by the time you did everything to an LS3 block to make it handle the power you'd be at or near the cost of an LSX block and you still only have four bolts per cylinder to hold the head to the block. But being that your plans are to be NA 427 I'd say go LS3 block or find an LS7.

A sleeved aluminum short block from Texas Speed would make for a strong, light, NA setup if you want to do a big bore 427ci. Scoggin Dickey offers an LS3 small bore 427ci that is more budget friendly but still potent.
