Default Question about the connecting rods I have.

Hello, I was told that these are Gen4/ Gen5 compatible 5.3 rods. What can you tell me about them? I’m trying to build a hybrid gen 3 block with Gen4 rods and pistons.

thanks

I’ve only seen one set of Gen4 rods in my 04 5.3 but the wrist pin area was squared off like gen 3 rods. Although these are supposed to be a later version? I can’t find any pictures of Gen4/5 rods that look like these on the internet.

Quick way to check: Get them warm, see if piston pins drop through...

They look like the rods that come in the LSA. They’re the only steel rods that I know of with that tapered pin end, but I can’t recall what the LT1/4 rods look like.

As long as it didn't come from a 4.8L or LS7, it should fit in a 5.3L. I'm not sure what the deal is with the tapered end. I have never seen that before. You will need Gen-4 style pistons. As mentioned earlier, the Gen-3s are press fit. The Gen-4s are floating, and use a different diameter wrist pin.

This is the full part # 3847 12649190.

looking this number up I see these are for TDI direct injection engines.

Then that's not an LS rod. That is probably an LT rod. I wouldn't try to use it in an LS engine.

The guy who I bought them from says that they are gen 4/5 rods.
I’m hoping some gm experts might chime in. I do appreciate all the info you guys are giving me.

You've already heard from guys who do know. It is a Gen V rod. Not Gen IV. There are no "Gen IV/V" rods

Default It’s done.

Milled Gen5 rods, Gen4 pistons, 24x reluctor on a Gen4 crank in a gen 3 block. 100% of the rotating assembly in brand new. I’m ready to finish this build.

What did you have to mill on the rods to work with this setup? How much material was removed?

we had to mill the wrist pin area to allow acceptable clearance.
It was around 0.0755 total removed.

They are a little wider than a Gen4 rod at the widest point of the taper on wrist pin after the mill work.

It is just going to be a mild engine as far as performance. BTR truck torque cam, flat tops and a small amount of chamber work. Hoping to get 350-375 hp at the crankshaft.

I’m more interested in the torque down low and a very well mannered engine. It’s going in a O2 single cab short bed daily driver.

Did you run a billet one piece reluctor wheel or a 2 piece?

To clarify here, did you hone the wristpin bushing, or mill the sides of the rod to make it narrower?
