Default .005 Undersized Timing Chain

Has anyone used a .005 under timing chain on an LS engine that has NOT been line honed to take out the slop? Every LS engine I have with new chains still has some slack after assembly. I remember someone talking about it, but I cant find the thread. Dont tell me slack is normal either, all my big blocks are tight and so are the older small blocks. 5* of slack is bad.

The bit of slack is there for when the engine grows as it warms up. You WANT a little slack when cold.

BBC and SBC are iron and don't grow as much as aluminum.

How old is the chain in question? If new, it could be defective. If not, it has stretched.

New. Tried summit brand and C5R. Both have the same excessive slack.

Then it sounds like the block might be out of spec, unless you had a good chain in it that fit right.

For someone to manufacture a chain that's .005" shorter, it would be almost impossible. I mean, each link would have to be like 1/10,000" (100 millionths of an inch!) shorter than std. Is the chain pre-stretched? Either that, or your block has an issue, or the slack you're seeing is normal. Both are impossible to diagnose from here. It would be nearly impossible to have every chain you're trying be out of spec..........

i think my block has an issue. I measured all the new chains inside length with a caliper and they are all the same. So i probably need to get my block align honed or something. Idk. Im just going to send it with a new rollermaster set for now.

I've never had an issue with Rollmaster. They are a very good chain.

My builder uses a matched set of billet gears and they come with a chain. I believe JP Performance is who makes them and they are always pretty tight once all installed.
