Default Identifying 823 heads

Hi,

I'm looking at a set of 823 heads to use as cores. The pictures look like the two heads are different in a couple ways. First picture - see at the top the circled area is different. Second picture - the 923 casting number looks different

What does this tell me? Are they off two different cars? Is this normal differences?

The circled area is the same. One just has a plug in the water hole (didn't have a crossover fitting in that place).

The casting # pretty much tells all, as far as what casting # they are. Those are both 823. However they were probably cast in 2 different plants, with the left one cast in May of a year ending in 9 and the right in Oct of a year ending in 6. They're just acoupla random heads, not a "set". I believe I'd try to find a couple that are a better match, if I could.

The top pic shows one steam port has been plugged, and the other isn’t. No biggie. If you want to run a four corner steam setup, just drill the plug out. It’s basically a rivet.
As far as the casting numbers looking different, it’s no big deal either. An 823, is an 823. They might not be a set from the same engine, but that doesn’t matter at all.

Same casting, same foundry just different batches, different dates. Those GM castings were cast by a company called Nemak.
